Oldest Gecko Fossil Ever Found

Scientists from Oregon State University and the Natural History Museum in London have announced the discovery of the oldest known fossil of a gecko, with body parts that are forever preserved in life-like form after 100 million years of being entombed in amber.

Due to the remarkable preservative power of being embalmed in amber, the tiny foot of this ancient lizard still shows the tiny “lamellae,” or sticky toe hairs, that to this day give modern geckos their unusual ability to cling to surfaces or run across a ceiling.

Research programs around the world have tried to mimic this bizarre adhesive capability, with limited success.

Man Told To Pay Wife, Even If She Stripped

Israel’s High Rabbinical court has ruled against a man who sought to avoid paying a divorce settlement because his former wife stripped before his friends while they were married.

The court pointed out that the man had not objected to his wife’s behaviour at the time and that he had photographed her as she took off her clothes in front of his buddies, the English-language Jerusalem Post said on Wednesday.

The man later hung photos of his naked wife in their bedroom. Marriages and divorces are handled by religious courts in Israel.

Living With Humans Has Taught Dogs Morals

So, what have dogs learned from living with humans? Apparently morals and a sense of fairness.

During one study, dogs which held up a paw were rewarded with a food treat.

When a lone dog was asked to raise its paw but received no treat, the researchers found it begged for up to 30 minutes.

But when they tested two dogs together but rewarded only one, the dog which missed out soon stopped playing the game.

Dr Friederike Range, of the University of Vienna, who led the study, said: ‘Dogs show a strong aversion to inequity. I would prefer not to call it a sense of fairness, but others might.’

Six-legged Bull In China

The owner of a six-legged bull in China is holding out for a higher price.

Li Guolin, a farmer in Yantou village, Kunming, says he’s been offered 36,000 yuan, nearly £3,000, for the bull.

But he told Metropolis Times: “I want to wait a bit longer, perhaps there will be a higher price offered for it.”

The 18-month-old bull was born with two small extra legs on it’s back.

Serbia To Import 250,000 Brides

Government officials are importing 250,000 brides for frustrated lovelorn bachelors in Serbia.

Social services chiefs are already in talks with neighbours like the Ukraine, Moldova and Russia and with Far Eastern countries like Vietnam, Burma and Cambodia.

Zeljko Vasiljevic, secretary of state for social policy, said: “There are 250,000 unmarried young men in Serbian villages who would like to get married but have no women to marry.

Puppy Scares Off Three Bears In New Jersey

A seven-kilogram cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs after they strayed into his owners’ backyard in New Jersey.

It’s unknown if Pawlee’s bark is worse than his bite, but the dog’s scare tactics worked just fine. These three bears got the hint and took off.

The dog’s owners had just let him out for the morning when he ran into the yard and started “barking his head off.”

His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods.

Cat Survives Seven Weeks Trapped Under Bath

A four-year-old cat in Germany called Bonny has survived after being walled in beneath a bathtub for seven weeks. ‘It’s a miracle,’ said Monika Hoppert, a 60-year-old widow from the western town of Stadthagen.

‘I’m a strong believer, I think she must have had a guardian angel. I’m so happy.’ Bonny disappeared on June 19 while workmen were replacing pipes in the block of flats where Hoppert lives. The black cat was last seen in a neighboring apartment, where the cladding around a bathtub had been removed.

Just before tub was sealed up again, Bonny had probably crept underneath, Hoppert said.

By the time the neighbor heard Bonny’s plaintive miaowing from behind the tiles on August 8, the cat’s weight had dropped from 13 pounds to 4 pounds.
