Man Cuts Feet off 'Promiscuous' Wife
A Pakistani man and some of his relatives chopped off his wife’s feet after accusing her of being promiscuous, police said yesterday.
The woman survived the gruesome attack, the latest in a wave of assaults that have raised international concern about the plight of women in rural Pakistan.
‘It is a shameful act of cruelty against a woman,’ said Talat Ali, a senior police official in Punjab.’
The 32-year-old woman told police her feet were chopped off on 24 June by her husband, her father-in-law, a brother-in-law and two others after they accused her of being ‘of bad character’, a euphemism for promiscuous.
Violence against women is common in rural Pakistan where tribal and feudal customs hold sway.
The latest incident occurred in central Punjab province where the 2002 gang-rape of a woman, Mukhtaran Mai, on the orders of a village council, triggered an international outcry.
Creatures Frozen for 32,000 Years Still Alive
A new type of organism discovered in an Arctic tunnel came to life in the lab after being frozen for 32,000 years.
The deep-freeze bacteria could point to new methods of cryogenics, and they are the sort of biology scientists say might exist on Mars and other planets and moons.
“The existence of microorganisms in these harsh environments suggests - but does not promise - that we might one day discover similar life forms in the glaciers or permafrost of Mars or in the ice crust and oceans of Jupiter’s moon Europa,” said Richard Hoover, an astrobiologist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Other microbes have been discovered in similar frigid environments, sometimes clinging to pockets of liquid water in ice packs. And some microbes survive in ice as spores, but they need to be cultured to bring them to life.
NASA described the newfound critter as “the first fully described, validated species ever found alive in ancient ice.”
“They immediately started swimming when the ice melted,” Hoover told LiveScience, adding that the cryopreserved bacteria were instantly ready to eat and multiply.
Dog Fights Off 700-Pound Alligator
PINOPOLIS, S.C. (AP) - Dogs don’t usually survive alligator attacks - especially when the reptile is three times the canine’s size. But Cooper, a 5-year-old golden retriever, is an exception. The spirited dog fought off a 14-foot, 700-pound alligator in a Lake Moultrie canal last month and lived to howl about it.
“I thought he was dead,” said 14-year-old Chase Kierspe of the family pet. “The alligator was huge. I didn’t think he could fight it. He fights me, but that’s all.”
Cooper escaped from the backyard for a swim across the canal and apparently attracted the gator. Chase was cutting the grass when he saw the alligator spying his pet. He threw a cup and a lawn chair at the gator, but it didn’t budge.
Then Cooper leaped and the gator followed. Chase ran and screamed for help.
After it was all over, Cooper had lost a few teeth and had flesh and muscle torn from a front leg and chunks of skin missing from both haunches. The gator suffered bites to its snout.
Woman 'Miraculously' Grows a Penis
Hlaing Thar Yar, Myanmar - Chicken-seller Thin Sandarin had always dreamt of being a man.
When she inexplicably grew a penis last month, the 21-year-old treated it as an awe-inspiring omen - as have the thousands of stunned villagers who have travelled to a pagoda to see him.
“On the morning of the full moon day of June 21, I noticed my thing (sex organ) was not the same as before,” Thin Sandar, who now goes by the male name Than Sein, said on Wednesday.
“And my breasts disappeared,” Than Sein added. “So I called out and showed it all to my mom and dad. It was very strange.”
Experts have examined him, and he awaits test results from a women’s hospital.
Woman Receives $74,000 Water Bill
MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) - It’s been a hot, dry summer in this St. Louis suburb, but Rose Mary Cook knew there was no way she could have used $74,000 worth of water.
The city’s utility department claimed Cook used 10 million gallons of water last month, charging her $29,787 for water, $43,581 for sewer, plus $893 for municipal tax.
“Luckily, when I opened the bill, I was sitting down,” Cook said. “I could have filled every pool in southern Illinois and still not used that much water.”
Cook presented the bill to a public works employee at City Hall. The city quickly determined the whopping charge was the result of a broken meter and issued her a corrected bill for $32.66 - waiving Cook’s monthly water and sewer charges for her troubles.
“My daughter asked me if I was hoarding water during the drought,” Cook said. “I told her I would, but I don’t know where I would find 10 million gallon jugs.”
Police Remove 246 Cats From Two Homes
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Animal control officers have removed 187 cats from a house in Mount Vernon and 59 cats and one dog from a home in Falls Church, authorities said Monday.
In the Mount Vernon case, police went to a home on Ludgate Drive, Friday, to find Ruth Knueven, 82, living inside with 187 cats. Officers said the dead bodies of 86 more were left in trash bins outside.
Most of the surviving cats were sent to an animal shelter, but animal control officers said they have to go back and get some cats that are still living in the walls and chimney.
In another case, officers found 59 cats and a dog at a house on Hillsborough Drive in Falls Church on June 27. The bodies of 29 dead cats were also found on the property where authorities said Jane Baldinger, 58, lived. Animal control officials took the surviving cats and dog into their custody.
In both cases, neighbors complained of foul stenches surrounding the buildings.
Both women have been charged with failure to care for animals. Both homes have been condemned and officials were helping the women find temporary housing.
Boys Urinated In Holy Water, Vandalized Church
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Someone urinated in the holy water at a suburban Rochester, N.Y., Catholic church.
Four local teens have been charged with that and other vandalism.
Monroe County sheriff’s deputies said the teenagers smashed wine bottles against the walls, left bicycle skid marks on the carpet, emptied the fire extinguishers and burned cigarette holes in the Saint Pious X Church.
The damage is estimated at $17,000.
Charged are 18-year-old Dan Seklar, 17-year-old Richard DeCarolis, 16-year-old Michael Street and a 15-year-old who is being charged as a juvenile. All are charged with burglary and criminal mischief, both felonies.
The boys have been released to their parents.
450 Sheep Jump to Their Deaths in Turkey
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.
In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned, Aksam reported.
“There’s nothing we can do. They’re all wasted,” Nevzat Bayhan, a member of one of 26 families whose sheep were grazing together in the herd, was quoted as saying by Aksam.
The estimated loss to families in the town of Gevas, located in Van province in eastern Turkey, tops $100,000, a significant amount of money in a country where average GDP per head is around $2,700.
“Every family had an average of 20 sheep,” Aksam quoted another villager, Abdullah Hazar as saying. “But now only a few families have sheep left. It’s going to be hard for us.”
