Weight Loss Possible When Self-belief High
If you are what you eat, what you eat has a lot to do with how you think about yourself, says a QUT PhD researcher whose study is part of an international research project on the healthy ageing of women.
Queensland University of Technology nursing researcher Rhonda Anderson said self-efficacy had emerged as a strong influence on women’s decision to do more exercise or eat more healthily.
She surveyed more than 560 South-East Queensland women aged between 51 and 66 on their exercise and diet habits and found that although women in their 50s were keen to make healthier diet and exercise changes, they had few effective strategies to draw upon.

Robobug Goes To War
It may have seemed like just another improbable scene from a Hollywood sci-fi flick – Tom Cruise battling against an army of robotic spiders intent on hunting him down. But the storyline from Minority Report may not be quite as far fetched as it sounds.
British defence giant BAE Systems is creating a series of tiny electronic spiders, insects and snakes that could become the eyes and ears of soldiers on the battlefield, helping to save thousands of lives.
Prototypes could be on the front line by the end of the year, scuttling into potential danger areas such as booby-trapped buildings or enemy hideouts to relay images back to troops safely positioned nearby. Read Full Story

Japanese Official Demoted For 780,000 Hits On Porn Sites
A Japanese civil servant was demoted for logging more than 780,000 hits on pornographic Web sites on his office computer over nine months. The man, a Kinokawa city government employee in western Japan, visited porn sites from June 2007 to February 2008, city official Tomiko Waki said. The man’s name was withheld.
City officials said the number of hits discovered on his computer’s internal log was so high in part because one click on certain types of pornographic sites registers multiple hits. Despite his frequent porn viewing, none of his colleagues noticed his activities, which he apparently conducted throughout the workday.
“Each desk is set apart from each other,” Waki said, adding that the man logged 170,000 hits on porn sites in July alone. The man’s supervisors discovered his extensive porn site visits after his computer became infected with a virus, prompting officials to examine his Web browser’s history.

Bionic Eyes Implants Give Partial Vision to Blind Patients

Some disabilities, such as blindness have long been beyond the limits of our medical and technological prowess to cure.
While significant advances have been made in preventing sight loss, many chronic, irreversible conditions remain that can lead to blindness. However, recent breakthroughs have turned science fiction into reality, offering limited vision to the fully blind.
Second Sight Vision, a U.S. company located near Los Angeles, is becoming the pioneering enterprise in commercial electro-ocular implants. Starting as early as 2004, it began carrying out research a series of 15 implants. The implants are part of a trial that has been going on for over three years, with patients in the U.S., Europe, and Mexico. The trial is the first of its kind.

Birds Can Detect Predators Using Smell
Many animal species detect and avoid predators by smell, but this ability has largely been ignored in the study of birds, since it was traditionally thought that they did not make use of this sense.
However, it has now been discovered that birds are not only capable of discerning their enemies through chemical signals, but that they also alter their behaviour depending on the perceived level of risk of predation.
The use of smell to detect chemical signals can be useful for birds in various situations, such as feeding and orientation. However, they can greatly increase their chances of survival if they can tell whether or not the smell they have detected is associated with a predator.

Fat Inmate Sues Jail Over Weightloss
An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing a county in Arizona, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn’t happy that he’s down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn’t provide inmates with enough food.
According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

Was Early Elephant An Amphibian?
Scientists studying two very ancient elephants surmised that they were probably semi-aquatic mammals, eating freshwater plants.
“Molecular data from modern elephants share a common ancestry with the sirenians - aquatic sea cows and dugongs,” said Alexander Liu of Oxford University, co-author of the report.
“Elephants may have an ancestor which was amphibious in its mode of life and we wanted to know if Moeritherium or Barytherium (existing 37 million years ago) was this semi-aquatic ancient relative.”

Bald Penguin Got Himself a Wetsuit!
What’s black and white and warm all over?
A penguin in a wetsuit, naturally. Sounds like a joke, but it’s quite serious for biologists at the California Academy of Sciences, who had a wetsuit created for an African penguin to help him get back in the swim of things.
Pierre, a venerable 25 years old, was going bald, which left him with an embarrassingly exposed, pale pink behind.
Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber to keep them warm, penguins rely on their waterproof feathers.
