Crabs feel pain when they are boiled and would remember it if only they could escape the pot, scientists believe. Research has shown that when hermit crabs are given small electric shocks, they try to avoid being zapped again. The finding could have important implications for the food industry, where many chefs boil crabs, lobsters and prawns alive in the belief that they are impervious to pain.

Ghost Photo Spooks Experts

An image of a figure in period costume at a 14th century Scottish castle has spooked experts investigating apparent photographs of ghosts. The picture, taken in May 2008, appears to show a man or woman in a ruff peering out of a barred window at Tantallon Castle.

No mannequins or costumed guides are employed at the castle, and three photographic experts have confirmed that no digital trickery was used on the photo.

400-Year-Old Egg

It was laid around 400 years ago by one of the great elephant birds of Madagascar. Before becoming extinct in the 17th century, the flightless creature was the world’s largest bird, standing 10ft tall and weighing half a ton.
