Dogs rescued from Vietnamese dinner plates
Bangkok - More than 1 000 dogs destined to be butchered and eaten in Vietnam were seized by Thai police who discovered them crammed inside three trucks, police said on Tuesday.
The 1 070 dogs, discovered in tiny cages in northeastern Thailand on Monday, were about to be taken through Laos to Vietnam, according to police.
Four men were arrested for illegal trading since they had no licence, according to police colonel Sunthorn Kongkraphan. If found guilty, the men would be fined but not jailed, he said.
The discovery of the dogs in Sakon Nakhon province, who were put in quarantine, was the latest in a series of regular dog seizures in northeastern Thailand.
Dog eating has come under fire in places like South Korea, but has gone unchallenged in Vietnam and is occasionally practised in Laos, China and northeast Thailand.

Lead guitarist Joe Klein, of the punk band Treephort, dropped his pants during their set and set his thong on fire. He then stripped off the burning thong and ran around the stage in the raw.
Police and firefighters responded, after someone called 911.
The band’s singer Lee Satterfield doesn’t know what all the fuss is about. He said they’re professionals and know how to do the burning thong thing.

Man Mistakenly Cuts Off Penis, Dog Eats It
An elderly Romanian man mistook his penis for a chicken’s neck, cut it off and his dog rushed up and ate it, the state Rompres news agency said Monday.
It said 67 year-old Constantin Mocanu, from a village near the southeastern town of Galati, rushed out into his yard in his underwear to kill a noisy chicken keeping him awake at night.
“I confused it with the chicken’s neck,” Mocanu, who was admitted to the emergency hospital in Galati, was quoted as saying. “I cut it ... and the dog rushed and ate it.”

“We thought this was going to create an uproar,” a store executive told Berliner Zeitung newspaper. “We thought there would be crowds clamouring to gape at here. Or that women’s rights protesters would turn out to demonstrate and give us even more publicity. And now it has turned out to be a fizzle.”
One middle-aged male customer was so ostentatiously not looking at her that he tripped and nearly fell on the escalator.
But he recovered his composure to tell TV interviewers, “I’m going on 60, so it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.”
That wholesome-looking but topless young woman admitted she had had certain qualms about taking the job.
“It’s a change from the usual modelling jobs, and the pay is certainly better,” she said. Somebody asked how much she was paid.”

Suspected Snake Shuts Cinema
HOUSTON - The film “Anacondas” is on the marquee of the Cinemark Tinseltown 290 cinema, but a suspected python has brought down the house.
The northwest Houston megaplex closed Sept. 22 after a janitor reported seeing an 8-foot-long (2.40-meter-long) snake as thick as a man’s arm in front of the screen in one theater, officials said.
Cinemark USA Inc. enlisted a snake expert to help find the snake. The expert believes it could be a Burmese python based on the yellow color and skin description reported by the janitor.
By Thursday, Cinemark officials did not know whether the snake was in the building or not.
“They’re still looking,” a spokeswoman said.
