Crocodile forces swimmers to make snappy exit
Darwin - Swimmers cooling off in a pool in the northern Australian city of Darwin made a snappy exit on Sunday after realising one of their fellow bathers was a crocodile.
The young saltwater crocodile, measuring about one metre, is believed to have wandered into the 50-metre pool at a leisure centre from a nearby lagoon in the tropical northern port.
A spokesperson at the leisure centre said there were only about four people in the pool at the time and they left in a hurry after spotting the croc.
“They got a bit of a shock,” she said.
However, she said the crocodile “really wasn’t big enough to hurt anyone”.
Police and parks and wildlife officials were called in to remove the crocodile which was described as placid and in poor health.
It was taken to a crocodile farm on the outskirts of the city.

Car stolen three times in six days
A 26-year-old Bismarck man who had his car stolen three times in six days just got it back again.
The dark purple Ford Contour first went missing Jan. 20, Bismarck Police Lt. Mike Wardzinski said. The car was found and towed back to the man’s house in the 200 block of West Sweet Avenue early Tuesday, only to disappear a few hours later.
The victim hadn’t even called police when the car was returned again about four hours later. He did pick up the telephone Wednesday at about 7:30 a.m. when he went out to find his car missing for the third time. Police found the car again Thursday afternoon.
The Contour was reportedly stolen from the driveway of the Sweet Avenue house all three times, Wardzinski said. There were no keys inside the car and the doors were locked. The owner told police it didn’t appear as if anyone had forced their way into the car.
Police have no suspects, and are investigating the case. Wardzinski said it appears like someone else has a set of keys to the Contour.
The thefts will likely stop now, Wardzinski said. One of the car’s wheel assemblies was damaged in the most recent theft.

Coroner Realizes 'Corpse' Is Living, Breathing Man
RALEIGH, N.C. - A medical examiner studying a body in a morgue was shocked when he saw the man take a shallow breath. Larry Green was removed from the morgue at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and taken to Duke University Medical Center in Durham. He was in critical condition Monday night.

However Lyn Henshaw is one of the lucky few who not only received confirmation that her message had been found, but also got to meet its recipient.

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A woman in northeastern Brazil has given birth to what one doctor called a “giant baby,” a boy weighing 16.7 pounds.
Francisca Ramos dos Santos, 38, gave birth to the healthy boy named Ademilton on Tuesday at a hospital in Salvador, 900 miles northeast of Sao Paulo. He was the largest baby born at the Albert Sabin Maternity Hospital in its 12-year history, the hospital said.
“Obviously the baby was born by Caesarean section,” hospital director Rita Leal said. “Both mother and baby are doing just fine.”
Ademilton “could truly be considered a giant baby, for he was born weighing what a six-month-old-baby normally weighs,” pediatrician Luiz Sena Azul told the Correio da Bahia newspaper.
Santos has four other children - ages 9, 12, 14, and 15 - who were born weighing between 7.7 pounds and 11 pounds.
“She knew Ademilton would be a big baby, but not this big” Leal said. “She, her husband and the hospital staff were caught by surprise.”
The average weight for newborns in Brazil is 7.7 pounds for boys and 6.6 pounds for girls.

“I was surfing 15m from the beach when the shark appeared under me,” recalls 25-year-old Mario Cesar. “I tried to punch him, but he took my arm and pulled me into the water. Eventually, I wrenched myself free and a big wave pushed me in to shore.”
Mario lost his right arm in the attack, which happened in 2002. Another survivor is 18-year-old Walmir da Silva, who was attacked while swimming in water barely up to his waist.
Today, he wears a prosthetic leg below the left knee, and is waiting for a prosthetic arm to be fitted.
“The shark pulled me under with so much power that I really thought I was going to die,” says Walmir. “And I was losing blood from my leg. But I hit his dorsal fin and kicked out - and in the end he released me.”
In absolute terms, there are more shark attacks in Florida and Australia than in Brazil.

Crocodile saved me from tsunami
A Sri Lankan pensioner claims he was saved from the tsunami by a crocodile which nudged him back to shore.
Upali Gunasekera says the estuarine crocodile was one which regularly visited the garden of his house in Matara.
Mr Gunasekera was strolling in the garden, which overlooks a river and the sea, when the tsunami struck and was washed away.
He clutched a floating stool with one hand and a chair with the other and managed to stay afloat until a wave knocked them from his grip.
That was when he saw what he thought was a log moving towards him and clung on to it for dear life.
However he soon realised he was holding on to the crocodile, reports the Daily News.
He began to despair after seven hours in the water but felt the crocodile nudge his belly and push him to the river bank.

Worker Killed In Bizarre Bakery Accident
LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (KYW) An employee died Monday at a South Jersey bakery after falling into a 500-gallon mixer.
CBS 3’s Todd Quinones reports the bizarre incident occurred at the LaBrea Bakery at the Pureland Industrial Complex just off Route 295 in Logan Township, New Jersey. Since the mishap, investigators have been talking with workers to figure out what exactly happened.
According to officials, the process worker who was killed was looking into the top inspection hole of the 20-foot-deep giant mixing vat when he apparently fell in.
“It’s a stainless steel vat with mixing devices internally that go through the process,” said Captain James Schmidt of the Logan Township Police Department.
The victim is a 34-year-old man from the Paulsboro, New Jersey, area. Although it is unknown how long he had been working at the bakery however his everyday duties included working around the mixer.
“Around 7:15 this evening, one of our employees was fatally injured. There’s a number of ongoing investigations at the moment,” said LaBrea Bakery Operations Manager Patrick Brannigan.
Authorities say that because most of the employees at the company only speak Spanish, a language barrier is making an investigation somewhat difficult.
In the meantime, Quinones reports that no evidence of foul play is present and it is believed the incident may simply have been a tragic accident.

Lisbon - A restaurant in Portugal has barred its customers from talking on their mobile telephones after a man had a racy conversation while having a meal at the establishment, a daily newspaper reported on Monday.
“He completely forgot that he was in a public place, everyone stopped to listen to the conversation which I can only say was really very sensual,” the owner of the restaurant, Carlos Fernandes, told Correio da Manha.
Diners at the restaurant in the northern city of Guimaraes, located 350km north-east of Lisbon, are now asked to leave their cellphones at the door, turn them off or in case of an emergency, keep them on vibration mode.
“Of course if the conversation is not pleasant, I am the one who pays because the food will not taste as good and it will seem like it is a problem of the restaurant,” Fernandes said.

Divorced man ordered to pay dog maintenance
A court in Italy has ordered a man to pay maintenance to his divorced wife for their pet dog.
The woman, not been named for legal reasons, took her former husband to court in the north-eastern town of Udine after he refused to give money towards her canine expenses.
She said: “He has to pay maintenance for our two children, so why shouldn’t he pay for the care of our dog Pepi, which we bought together.
“With food and vet bills a dog can cost almost as much as a child to raise.”
Judge Enrico Cavalieri ruled in favour of the woman and ordered her estranged husband to pay several hundred pounds a year for the dog.

A Russian lawyer has staked a claim on all the world’s clouds and is using the same law that allowed an American man to claim the moon.
Vladimir Osipiv is hoping that the clouds will be snapped by environmentalists, who will then take legal action against governments that allow clouds to be polluted.

Prague - A 32-year-old Czech tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a chainsaw but survived after the machine missed his jugular vein and got stuck in his spine, a report said.
This was his second suicide attempt, CTK news agency reported. He had earlier tried to hang himself from a tree branch but the branch snapped and he broke both legs in the fall.
The man was taken to a Prague hospital and is recovering in an intensive care unit.
Family problems were the probable reason for his suicide attempts, CTK reported.
His first suicide attempt came after his wife threatened to divorce him and take their daughter with her.

A Romanian mayor was shocked when he was asked to investigate a baby accused of theft.
Mayor Ionel Naftanaila, from Albestii de Muscel, Arges county, received the official request from police.
It asked him to help with inquiries into theft allegations involving someone born on February 27, 2004.
The mayor said: “I had a big surprise when I received the piece of paper and at first I didn’t know what to believe.
“It was an official document with everything and by which I was being asked to make a social investigation and help police. It was really funny too.”
Eventually it turned out the police had written the wrong year on the letter and the suspect was born in 1972, not 2004.

Thieves prefer coffee to cars
German detectives are hunting thieves who broke into a car showroom and stole only the coffee machine.
Dozens of brand new Citroen cars were parked in the showroom in Bonn and the keys were on the wall.
But the thieves ignored all the new motors, and instead unplugged and made off with the coffee machine.
Bonn police spokesman Robert Scholten said: “The coffee machine was a pretty good one but not worth as much as a new car.
“Staff only discovered the theft when they went to make a drink in the kitchen and realised the machine was missing.”
The showroom which was owned by the Citroen main dealer in Bonn is on the main street. Police so far have no clues as to the identity of the culprits.

Man Shot With Nail Gun Arrested at ER
ST. GEORGE, Utah - A man who drove himself to the emergency room after being shot in the calf with a nail gun was arrested at the hospital for not stopping when ordered.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Lang started chasing the vehicle after it was spotted driving recklessly on Interstate 15, tailing the man to the hospital.
At one point, Lang said he told the driver over a loudspeaker to pull over. He said the man got out of the car at a stop light, but Lang ordered him to get back in his car. Then, the man took off again toward the hospital.
The driver was reacting to the emotion of an emergency, but an ambulance wasn’t called and drivers don’t have a right to drive like an emergency vehicle, Lang said.
Drivers must pull over when ordered by an officer, and Lang said it would have only taken a minute or two to explain the situation.

Drunken man has a surprise for doctors
Sofia, Bulgaria - Incredulous doctors made five blood tests on a drunken man to confirm he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.914, far above the usual life-threatening range, police and doctors said on Tuesday.
The 67-year-old man, whose name was not released, was treated in hospital on December 20, when a car knocked him down on a street in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
A breath test showed high blood alcohol level, but police officers thought the result was inaccurate, because the man was conscious and talked with them, said Colonel Angel Rangelov, head of police in Plovdiv.
Laboratory analysis of five subsequent blood samples taken the same day confirmed that the man had had a 0.914 blood alcohol content, Rangelov said. An 0.55 blood-alcohol level is usually considered as life-threatening.
Dr Svetlan Dermendzhiev of Plovdiv’s University hospital told state news agency BTA he had not seen such a high level.
The man was reported in stable condition after treatment for head injuries.

400-pound gator yanked from creek in downtown Miami
A 12-foot alligator weighing more than 400 pounds and described as among the largest ever caught near downtown Miami was hoisted from a creek Monday by a firetruck.
The alligator was discovered in Wagner Creek, about 16 miles from the Everglades, in the shadows of two major hospital complexes and around the corner from the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, a court house, a county jail and government office buildings.
It was about the last place you’d expect to see an alligator of any size,’’ said licensed trapper Todd Hardwick. Alligators are much more common in suburban canals and lakes.

New Delhi: The police have arrested a man who sent people fleeing in panic when he sounded a false tsunami alarm in Chennai, a report said on Monday. “The tsunami is coming, run, run,” Jackey (30) shouted on Sunday in a fishing cove along the city’s Marina beach, where at least 200 died when the tidal wave hit last week.
People fled, fearing another monster wave, United News of India news agency reported. But when nothing happened, an angry crowd roughed up the drunken man and handed him over to the police, the agency said.

Man Wanting Sex With Boss' Wife Breaks Into Wrong House
SAN DIEGO—A man admitted Monday in a Vista, Calif., courtroom that he broke into a home—allegedly to have sex with his boss’ wife.
Adan Morales, 24, pleaded guilty to burglary of an occupied dwelling, which is a felony. He faces up to a year in jail as a result of the plea agreement, reported KNSD-TV in San Diego.
Morales was accused of breaking into an Encinitas, Calif., home in hopes of having sex with the woman, only to discover he was in the wrong house. He was caught by sheriff’s deputy Leslee Hall on the morning of Nov. 13, shortly after the break-in was reported.
Morales went to the home looking for a woman named Estella “and said that he was going into the house to talk to her and maybe something more,” Hall testified in the preliminary hearing.
When asked to clarify “something more,” Morales responded that “he was hoping to have sex with her,” Hall said.
The defendant said Estella was his boss’ wife, and he had seen her at the house but had no relationship with her, Hall said.

Tsunami Adds to Belief in Animals' 'Sixth Sense'
Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to notions they possess a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said Thursday.
Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening,” H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department, said Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 2 miles inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards. “There has been a lot of anecdotal evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven,” said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behavior specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.
“There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting,” he told Reuters.

Johannesburg - A total of 74 drunken drivers were arrested in Hillbrow on New Year’s eve, Johannesburg Metro Police said on Saturday.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said it was the highest number of drunken drivers ever arrested in Hillbrow on a New Year’s eve.
Minnaar said the male and female drivers were charged and each granted bail of R800. They were released three hours later.
They are due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

TAIPEI, Taiwan—It’s now the world’s tallest skyscraper.
Taiwan celebrated the official opening of “Taipei 101” Friday with a colorful opera performance and some of the island’s top personalities. The building stands 1,679 feet tall, and has 101 floors. Some liken it to a giant bamboo shoot of glass and steel.
The building is 184 feet taller than the previous record-holder, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. And Taipei 101 is 271 feet higher than the tallest U.S. skyscraper, the Sears Tower in Chicago.
Near the top of the building, a huge ball moves about to counter strong winds and seismic vibrations. Taiwan often suffers earthquakes, though most of the tremors don’t cause any casualties or damage.

LONDON (AFP) - A 10-year-old British schoolgirl saved the lives of hundreds of people in southern Asia by warning them a wall of water was about to strike, after learning about tsunamis in geography class, British media reported.
Tilly, who has been renamed the “angel of the beach” by the top-selling tabloid The Sun, was holidaying with her family on the Thai island of Phuket when she suddenly grasped what was taking place and alerted her mother.

Man Allegedly Swallows Man's Finger in Bar
HARARE, Zimbabwe - A man allegedly bit off and swallowed another man’s finger during a bar brawl, court officials said Thursday.
Alex Nyarubakora, 39, appeared in court in the town of Chitungwiza, 15 miles south of Harare, on Wednesday charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Isau Janhi said Nyarubakora was arguing with his wife in a bar last week when he became angry at a second man’s attempts to intercede.
After the two men began fighting, Nyarubakora is accused of biting off his opponent’s finger, chewing and swallowing it. No remains of the finger were found by police at the scene, Janhi said.
Nyarubakora was freed on bail to reappear on court on Jan. 14. He faces the penalty of a fine or imprisonment.

Police Say Man Bit Off Co-Worker's Ear
DALLAS - A 21-year-old man bit off a co-worker’s ear after an argument over money, police said.
Doctors were able to reattach Anthony Tran’s ear, police said. Co-worker Ray Leon Jefferson was in Dallas County jail Wednesday on $25,000 bail facing an aggravated robbery charge.
The dispute began Tuesday night at a plant of Strategic Partners, a distributor of medical uniforms. According to police, Jefferson asked Tran, 21, for change for a $100 bill. Tran pulled a $20 bill and a $50 bill from his wallet. Jefferson took both bills, the police report said.
After telling Jefferson to return the money, police said, Tran held a pen to Jefferson’s stomach. A scuffle ensued, and Tran’s ear was bitten off, the police report said.
