WASHINGTON - Many Americans are so sleepy that they are having problems in their marriages, making mistakes at work and even going without sex, according to a report released on Tuesday.
The poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that 75 percent of adults frequently have a symptom of a sleep problem such as frequent waking during the night or snoring. But few believe they have a sleep problem and most ignore it.
“Half of the country sleeps pretty well—the other half has problems,” Foundation chief executive Richard Gelula said in a statement.
What is to blame? The survey of more than 1,500 adults found that 87 percent usually watched TV in the hour before going to bed, 47 percent usually had sex and 64 percent read.
“Only about one-half of respondents are able to say on most nights, ‘I had a good night’s sleep’,” the Foundation, which issues regular reports showing Americans do not get enough sleep, said in a statement.

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - A Czech tractor driver died under eight tons of manure in a bizarre accident that has baffled his employers, local media reported.
The 34-year old man, identified only as Martin T., suffocated after the load fell on him while he was dumping it in a field near the western Czech city of Karlovy Vary. “It absolutely beats me how this could happen,” said Vladimir Erps, chief of the company employing the victim.
“The truck is operated from the tractor cabin, using hydraulics. There was nothing for him to do under the truck, but it’s tough to blame him now that he is dead,” the news site quoted him as saying.

Man Witholds Sex from Wife for 7 Years
Seven years of withholding sex went too far in the eyes of an Italian court, which has ordered a Sicilian man to pay alimony to his wife for refusing conjugal relations.

The behaviour is a violation of article 143 of the civil code which imposes a duty of moral and material assistance between husband and wife, the court ruled.

Authorities in Nevis barred a gay and nudist cruise organized by a Miami company from entering the tiny Caribbean island Wednesday, saying it was offensive to local customs.

Man Survives 1,000 Foot Fall
A Czech man survived a 1,000 foot fall down the side of a mountain.
Martin Tlusty, 20, from Prague had been climbing with friends in the Low Tatras mountain range in neighbouring Slovakia when he lost his footing, slipped and fell 1,000 feet down the side of the mountain.
He said: “We had come to the end of a trail, but as I started to turn round, the ground went from under me and I fell. All I could feel was snow, ice and rocks underneath me.”
He was taken to hospital by mountain rescue teams but doctors said he suffered only cuts and bruises from the fall and would soon bounce back, local daily Novy Cas reported.
The man said he would be back climbing the same mountains as soon as possible. He said: “I’ll definitely be back.”

Increasing sex frequency from once a month to at least once a week provides as much happiness as a $50,000-a-year raise, according to a paper titled “Money, Sex and Happiness: An Empirical Study,” submitted to the National Bureau of Economic Research, one of the leading organizations in its field.
The findings come from two economists - David Blanchflower of England’s Dartmouth College and Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick in England - who are leaders in a growing field known as “happiness economics,” which includes research on how such things as unemployment or the position of an employee’s desk affect happiness.
“People are interested in questions about what gives people satisfaction,” Blanchflower said. “We, as economists, look at money and marriage.”
In their 2004 study, Blanchflower and Oswald analyzed self-reported sexual activity and levels of happiness of more than 16,000 American adults who participated in surveys since the early 1990s.
“I think it says more money is not going to bring you as much happiness as a good family life,” Blanchflower said.
Furthermore, their study found that a lasting marriage offers about $100,000 worth of happiness a year; that is, on average, a single person would need to earn an extra $100,000 annually to be as happy as the married person with the same education and other characteristics.

Abstinent Teens are Really Big Hoes
Teens who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are more likely to take chances with other kinds of sex that increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, a study of 12,000 adolescents suggests.
The report by Yale and Columbia University researchers could help explain their earlier findings that teens who pledged abstinence are just as likely to have STDs as their peers.
The latest study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that teens pledging virginity until marriage are more likely to have oral and anal sex than other teens who have not had intercourse. That behavior, however, “puts you at risk,” said Hannah Brueckner, assistant professor of sociology at Yale and one of the study’s authors.
Among virgins, boys who have pledged abstinence were four times more likely to have had anal sex, according to the study. Overall, pledgers were six times more likely to have oral sex than teens who have remained abstinent but not as part of a pledge.
The pledging group was also less likely to use condoms during their first sexual experience or get tested for STDs, the researchers found.

Hanoi - A Vietnamese man who took a fake tablet of the impotence drug Viagra was admitted to hospital after his erection lasted two days, doctors said Thursday.
The 47-year-old man was admitted Sunday to Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City from nearby Vinh Long province, two days after taking the Chinese-made tablet, said a doctor from the hospital where he was treated.
The man bought the pill from an acquaintance for less than two dollars last Friday and took it that evening. The man did not have intercourse after taking the pill, but could not get rid of the erection, said the doctor who declined to be named.

American researcher Dr Stuart Meloy claimed his invention - known as the Orgasmatron - resulted in improved sexual response in 91 per cent of those in clinical trials.

Berlin - A blow-up sex doll sparked a bomb alert in a German post office after it started to vibrate inside a package awaiting delivery, police said on Wednesday.

LAKELAND, Fla. A Florida medical examiner says a man found dead in a pond was the victim of a nearly nine-foot alligator.
The animal has been captured and killed. It had the missing man’s arm in its stomach.
Officials don’t know what Don Owen was doing at the pond about a dozen miles from his home in Bartow. He had been missing since Wednesday when he was seen at a convenience store.
His remains were found by several men fishing in the pond.
Residents said they had fed the alligator, which is illegal and dangerous. A Wildlife Commission spokesman says alligators normally flee from humans unless threatened or cornered. But he says alligators that have been fed by humans begin to look at them as a food source.

NARA - Several junior high school students playing “chicken” happened to find a decomposed body when they entered an empty house, police said.
The boys from Osaka’s Higashisumiyoshi-ku made the finding on the second floor of a house in Oji, Nara Prefecture, on Sunday afternoon, and the mother of one of them alerted Nara police later in the day.
Nara Prefectural Police officers searched the empty house and believe the body belonged to a man who had formerly lived there. They also believe the man died of natural causes.
Police said that the near skeletal corpse was clad in men’s trousers and socks. A cloth was hanging on a wall and there was an empty lunch box tray in the kitchen.
The first floor of the house, which stands along National Route 25, was formerly a coffee shop, but the building has been empty for about 10 years, police said.

So big is the boob job business, cosmetic surgeons have now joined make-up companies and fashion houses as the bosom buddies supplying the advertising revenue keeping women’s publications afloat.
“Ever since the simple cosmetic surgery procedures became popular a few years ago, there’s this image that’s arisen that has made people lose their inhibitions about going under the knife to make themselves look better,” Mika Iorui, a journalist specializing in schoolgirl issues, tells Shukan Shincho. “There are an increasing number of girls who’re going in with their mothers to have breast enhancement operations together so they can both get over their worries about having small breasts and lead happier lives.”
Tokyo-based cosmetic surgeon Mitsuyoshi Fukuda confirms the increasing number of schoolgirls and their mothers asking about breast enhancement ops, saying they’re the biggest concern he faces.
“Girls in their teens are beset by a variety of emotions. Many of them develop a complex about their busts. They become negative about just about everything, and many drop out of school, or even society altogether,” he says. “Many mothers suggest breast enhancement to their daughters and they come here together. It seems the biggest worry the girls have is the common baths they take with classmates while on school trips.”
Fukuda says he tries to convince most of the girls who come to him with worries about the size of their busts not to go through with breast enhancement procedures, but he only succeeds about 90 percent of the time.
Another plastic surgeon, Yoshihiro Kitamura, blames moms for inspiring their daughters to crave giant boobs.
“Girls of 17 or 18 have more bountiful breasts and hips than women older than them, yet they tend to over-emphasize when they compare themselves to others. Girls are generally built like their mothers were. I suppose that makes some mothers feel a bit guilty when their daughters are bothered by the size of their boobs,” Kitamura says. “Lots of mothers will squirrel money away without telling their husbands, then come in here for a boob job with their girls.”

Tokyo - A 38-year-old truck driver in Japan’s north-western Niigata prefecture was arrested on Thursday for allegedly making more than 10 000 prank calls to a telephone directory at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, police authorities said.
Instead of asking for telephone numbers, Kengo Terauchi asked female operators indecent questions as well as asking them out for dates, according to the authorities.
Terauchi has been making such prank calls since February last year and made as many as 1 000 phone calls per day to the call centre using his cellphone.
NTT charges ¥120 (about R6) if a customer receives a telephone number in response to an inquiry, but there is no charge for speaking to an operator.

LAKE CITY, Fla.—When Teresa Morrison’s cat had a litter Tuesday, she noticed something was different about one of the kittens.
“I thought it had growth on its face,” she said.
The kitten has two mouths, two noses and four eyes. She immediately called her veterinarian.
“He said he’s never seen it. Never,” Morrison said.
The kitten is nursing from its mother, which the vet said is a good sign.
“(She’s) feeding off one mouth now; sometimes go to the other one, but he’s not getting it open,” Morrison said.
The vet told Morrison he didn’t know if the cat has one or two brains, but having one would give the cat a better chance to survive.
He said if the kitten lives 48 hours, he has a good chance of living a full life.
Wednesday morning, Morrison named the cat “Deuce.”

Knife in skull proves a headache
Hospital staff treating a retired teacher for a headache in Poland found a 12.5cm blade in his head.
Polish doctors had X-rayed Leonard Woronowicz, 61, to see if he had cracked his skull in a fall while doing some repairs in his kitchen four days earlier.
Instead they found the blade just below his right ear. It had snapped off at the handle.
“I thought they might give me an aspirin. Instead they pulled a 5inch knife blade out of my head,” he said.
Mr. Woronowicz said the knife must have been among tools scattered on the floor. He did not realise it was missing until he needed to cut some bread.
“Despite carefully searching the room I could only find the handle. But I forgot about it as my headaches got worse over the next few days.”

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A construction worker accidentally shot himself in the eye with a nail gun and then pulled the 2 1/2-inch nail out of his face, according to a police report and a co-worker.
Joseluis Franco, 19, was using an air-powered, Hitachi nail gun to help build a home Wednesday when a nail bounced back and lodged in his eye, crew leader Rogelio Ocampo said. Franco was nailing a two-by-four to concrete when the nail ricocheted.
Franco was conscious when police arrived at the scene and was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was treated and released. Police said Friday they don’t know the condition of Franco’s eye.
Originally from a town near Acapulco, Mexico, Franco has been in the construction business for about three weeks, Ocampo said.

Teacher Shows Her Own Sex Pictures to Students
A Judson High School substitute teacher has lost her job after police say X-rated pictures of her having sex were passed around a classroom, school officials said.
These days with modern technology, you can take a picture anywhere with the click of your cellphone.
It was a camera phone that got some X-rated pictures into Judson High School and cost the substitute her job.
“This teacher obviously didn’t have her heart in the right place and didn’t have enough sense to actually know what was right and wrong in the classroom,” Judson ISD spokesman Sean Hoffmann said.
The substitute teacher was supposed to be giving a lesson on health at Judson’s Gray Campus. Instead, it was more like a sex education class courtesy of the teacher’s camera phone.
“The female substitute had pictures of herself and pictures of another individual with her on that camera phone,” Hoffmann said.
So is this the way Sex Ed is supposed to be these days?

Woman Accused Of Naked Dog Wrestling
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A 40-year-old woman described as a transient was jailed in Grand Junction - accused of jumping a fence to wrestle naked with a dog.
An arrest affidavit indicated that Katherine Earle scaled the four-foot fence just before midnight Tuesday, then stripped in order to wrestle with the male Labrador retriever-blue heeler mix.
Residents of the home awoke from the noise and called police.
Responding officers said Earle told them she was having sex with the dog, and that she does it all the time. The dog’s owner, Six Starr, said that Earle has been friendly with the dog, but that Earle has been acting strangely for the past six months.
“What took place last night, I don’t even want to guess,” Starr told the Grand Junction Sentinel.
The dog wasn’t injured, according to KMGH-TV in Denver.
Police arrested Earle on a previous warrant and took her to the Mesa County Jail to serve a 25-day sentence.

“Nude modeling is incredibly important,” Lindsey Page, a senior art student at Penn State, said. “Drawing from a photograph versus drawing from a real human being is a world of difference.”
A Penn State expert considers nude modeling essential to visual art.
“You can go all the way back to the beginning of history and see that there’s nudity in art,” said Charles Garoian, director of the School of Visual Arts, who has spent 35 years researching and teaching art.
Garoian said the body has historically been used by artists to interpret the human condition of that time period.

LONDON (Reuters) - Take two puppies, cut off their heads and collect the blood, reads the 17th century instructions—not for some voodoo rite but to cure pimples among the middle class.
Weird health and beauty recipes have been around for a long time. Now two old manuscripts, found at a British stately home and coming up for auction, suggest some truly odd cures for everyday ailments.
The 300-year-old cookery, medical and household recipe books, lavishly illustrated and with elaborate script, give advice on almost everything, from treating burns to getting rid of freckles, said manuscript specialist Luke Batterham.
“These books are a very direct insight into what people were interested in in the late 17th century,” Batterham told Reuters. “People seem to go a very long way for beauty, now and then.”

Doctor Takes Pics of Naked Female Patients
A Tokyo doctor suspected of taking a digital photograph of a female patient after making her take off her clothes is being investigated on suspicion of harassment.
Police said the doctor worked as a chest and cardiovascular surgery official at Metropolitan Bokuto Hospital in Tokyo. They conducted a search at the hospital after receiving a complaint from the female patient, and have reportedly seized documents from the institution.
Investigators said the doctor examined the woman in July last year, while she was receiving treatment for thrombosis she suffered after undergoing a Caesarian section birth. When he saw her, he allegedly made out that he was examining the affected area and had her take off all of her clothes, then photographed her with a digital camera.
Since the doctor’s actions differed from how regular ultrasound examinations were conducted and because there was no nurse present, the woman became suspicious. When she confronted the doctor, he reportedly handed her the photo files, police said.
The woman filed a complaint with police after talking with members of her family.
When questioned by the Mainichi over the doctor’s actions, a hospital official said, “It’s true that the police searched our premises on Feb. 24, but at present we are fully cooperating with investigators and we can’t give any details.”

NEW DELHI - India’s Hindu nationalist parties have begun promoting products made from cow urine and dung as cures for everything from cancer to acne.
The cow is a sacred symbol to India’s 800 million Hindus, and parties often use them as a symbol to further their political goals.
Now, party members are capitalizing on the belief that cow products have therapeutic value.
Their products include a potion made of urine that’s supposed to fight cancer and a pill that they say cures liver diseases, diabetes and hemorrhoids.
However, some experts question the medical benefits of the byproducts. One retired government scientist said “much more needs to be done” before people can consider the products effective.

A former topless dancer who was famously cleared of battering a Florida nightclub patron with her “crazy big” breasts has shed her oversized silicone implants and put one of them up for auction on eBay.
The woman known professionally as Tawny Peaks said on Wednesday she recently came across the implants in a box in her closet after watching a television discussion about crazy things sold on eBay and decided, “Why not ... I don’t need it any more.”

Woman Claims She Found Maggots in her Fast Food
MIAMI - A Miramar woman claims she received food infested with maggots from a Pollo Tropical drive-thru, news partner NBC 6 reported Tuesday morning.
The woman - who wanted to be identified only by her first name, Nicole - said she received the tainted fish and rice from a restaurant at Miramar Parkway and Southwest 148th Avenue.The woman told NBC 6 she did not notice the fly larvae until she had eaten most of the meal. Nicole said she was unable to keep the meal down.
“What should have been rice was moving ... I ate it all, completely eaten. And they were moving - maggots - moving all over,” Nicole said.
Nicole said she called police and expects the health department to be notified as well.
“We showed them the maggots, and called the cops, and we asked them (Pollo Tropical) to please don’t serve food anymore,” Nicole told NBC6.
NBC 6 reported Pollo Tropical issued the following statement in response to the woman’s accusations: “We just learned of this reported incident and are taking it very seriously. Food quality if of our utmost concern and we will investigate this incident thoroughly.”

Man Finds His Stolen Tools For Sale On eBay
INDIANAPOLIS - A carpenter learned that tools stolen from him were being sold on an Internet auction site, prompting detectives to find thousands of dollars worth of allegedly stolen items at an Indianapolis man’s garage, police said.
Police said they plan to arrest Christopher Lamont Hayden, 34, on charges of theft, WRTV-TV in Indianapolis reported Monday.
The carpenter, John Guichelaar, said his tools were stolen, and that he spent a week checking local lawn shops for them. Then, he said, he found them on eBay. “What I ended up doing was actually purchasing some of my tools so I could receive them and prove that they were mine,” Guichelaar said.
