Fairbury Man Says He Was Nearly Hit by Meteorite
FAIRBURY, Neb. - A Fairbury man was watering his yard last week when he had a very rare and close encounter with a possible meteorite.
Brad Kinzie was out watering his yard in the wee hours of the morning Saturday - trying to avoid the hottest period of the day - when an object whizzed by his head and landed.
“It came over my head, probably, about a foot and a half. I could feel the breeze,” Kinzie said. “It was silver and it kind of had red and black on the back of it and smoke.”
The object landed about 65 feet from where Kinzie was watering.
“I stood ... here looking at it, ‘cause it was still glowing. I says, ‘Wow,’” Kinzie said.

Thai Farmers Plan Big Wedding for Small Cows
Bangkok - In what has been billed as a world first, two dwarf Brahman cows have been scheduled to tie the knot in Thailand’s northeastern province of Sa Kaew next month, media reports said on Monday.
The nuptials were set over the weekend at the Sa Kaew cattle market, 160km east of Bangkok, where the owners of two male and female dwarf Brahman cows agreed to get their diminutive bovines together for the sake of reproducing the petite breed, said The Nation newspaper.
Krachang Kanokprasert, owner of the dwarf bull, originally wanted to buy the intended bride - who stands 70cm tall and weighs 50kg - but her proud owner refused to part with her.
Instead, the farmers agreed to join the diminutive breeding stock in matrimony, with the date set for July 10. The ceremony will be conducted with all the pomp of a human wedding.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Arthur Richardson thought he’d pull a prank and pretend to swallow a friend’s truck key. Unfortunately, Wednesday’s prank backfired when Richardson plopped the key in his mouth and gravity took over.
Richardson went to a doctor Thursday, who X-rayed his stomach and got a clear picture of the key. The doctor said the key posed no danger, but Richardson’s friend needed to use his truck.
So Richardson and his friend took the X-rays to a locksmith, who used the pictures to fashion a new key. And it worked in the truck.

Erie, Pa. - Two women who participated in a prison love letter scheme that netted more than $220,000 will spend more time in prison.
Cynthia Denise Livingston was sentenced Monday to one and one-half years in prison and ordered to pay nearly $5,000 restitution.
Michelle Mendoza was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered pay nearly $7,700 restitution.
Livingtson and Mendoza are among ten inmates from Erie, Crawford and Lycoming counties indicted in September.
According to prosecutors, the inmates placed personal ads to start relationships with men. Typically, the inmate would send a photograph of an attractive woman, falsely claiming it was of her.
The inmate would ask for money to spend at the prison commissary and, as time progressed, they’d claim they’d soon be released and needed money to relocate.
Then they’d tell the men they received new charges and wouldn’t be getting out of prison after all.

Alleged 'Vampire' Faces Sex Charges In Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS - A teenager has been charged with multiple counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and sexual battery against two female victims, Indianapolis television station WRTV reported.
The unusual part of the alleged crimes is that Steven Rogers, 18, allegedly told the victims he was a vampire, police said. Investigators added that Rogers told female victims that he also worships Satan.
There are no allegations that he tried to suck the victims’ blood, but police said he bit and bruised their necks.
Rogers denied the allegations, WRTV reported.
“It was something I got into when I was in sixth grade and I got out of it in eighth grade,” Rogers said. “I stopped doing it in the eighth grade. I realized it was stupid.”
Stupid or not, court documents said that one of the attacks occurred last month at the Oakridge Manor mobile home park.
The alleged attack was against a 15-year-old girl, police said.

LAGOS (Reuters) - Nigerian police have arrested a cow that killed a bus driver who was urinating on a highway, a police spokesman said Thursday.
The horned African cow, which was wandering stray in the Ojo district of Nigeria’s biggest city Lagos, also injured several bystanders after killing the man.
“The cow went mad, ran into a bus driver and knocked him down. Efforts to revive him were fruitless,” said Lagos police spokesman Olubode Ojajuni.
Some people suggested the animal be shot, but the district police officer ordered it to be taken alive.
“You know what it will take to arrest a mad cow?” one newspaper quoted a policeman as saying. “We applied ingenuity and arrested the cow, which is now being detained at the station,” he said without going into details.
Ojajuni said police were seeking the cow’s owner to press charges for failing to keep it under control.

The finding suggests that humans may be capable of subconsciously increasing semen quality when faced with the possibility that their sperm will have to outrun those of other men in a woman’s reproductive tract.
In the study, zoologists Leigh Simmons and Sarah Kilgallon of the University of Western Australia in Perth asked 52 heterosexual men aged between 18 and 35 years to ejaculate into a container after viewing the two types of image.
The volunteers had previously abstained from sexual activity for two to six days. In samples from men who viewed the images containing the two men and a woman - the “sperm-competition” images - 52% of the sperm were motile. This compared with 49% sperm motility in the men who viewed the images of women only – a difference that was statistically significant after taking into account lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.

A man who rescued a trapped motorist from a burning car is now suing the driver for £400,000 because of the effect on his health.
Gordon Sansbury pulled Alexander Guthrie from the vehicle after it crashed into his house and burst into flames.

Arctic Lakes Disappearing, Climate Scientists Say
More than 100 lakes in the Arctic have disappeared over the past three decades, according to a team of Canadian and American scientists, who say climate change at high latitudes may be part of the problem.
In the June 3 issue of the journal Science, the researchers report on the changes they tracked in 10,000 large lakes over 500,000 square kilometres of tundra from the early 1970s to 1997-98.
They found the total number of large lakes decreased by around 11 per cent. Many shrank significantly, while 125 disappeared completely and were replaced by vegetation.
University of Alaska professor Larry Hinzman, a member of the team that spent several years studying satellite photography of the Siberian tundra, said the disappearance may be traced back to climate change’s effect on the land underneath the lakes.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. A man was charged with arson on Friday after he allegedly heated a can containing gasoline in a microwave oven following a domestic dispute.
Vereen Taylor, 32, is accused of setting the fire at about 2 a.m. Friday after arguing with the mother of one of his children, Charleston police Sgt. Aaron James said.
Taylor and an unidentified friend got out of the house without injury. The friend ran back inside and attempted to put out the fire but was overpowered by flames and escaped a second time without injury, James said.
The two-story wood frame house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
Taylor was being held at South Central Regional Jail awaiting arraignment.

Man Injured in Toilet Blast Files Suit
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) A Pennsylvania man injured when a portable toilet exploded is suing a general contractor and a coal company for negligence.
John Jenkins, 53, and his wife Ramona Jenkins, 35, of Brave, Pa., filed the lawsuit in Monongalia County Circuit Court on Tuesday. They are suing Chisler Inc., a general contractor from Fairview, and Eastern Associated Coal Corp. for $10 million in damages.
The explosion occurred July 13, 2004, at Parrish Shaft in Blacksville. Jenkins, a North West Fuels Development Inc. methane power plant operator, entered a portable toilet, sat down and tried to light a cigarette.
“When I struck the lighter, the whole thing just detonated - the whole top blew off,” John Jenkins said. “I can’t tell you if it blew me out the door or if I jumped out.”
The lawsuit says the cigarette ignited methane gas leaking from a pipe underneath the unit.
