Thief 'Drinks' Work of Art
An artist’s latest work - a bottle of melted Antarctic ice - may have been stolen and drunk by a thirsty thief.
Artist Wayne Hill filled a two-litre clear plastic bottle with melted ice to highlight global warming.
But the artwork, valued at £42,500, went missing while on display at a literary festival, reports the Scotsman.
Entitled Weapon of Mass Destruction, it vanished halfway through the Ways with Words festival at Dartington Hall, Devon.
Mr Hill said: “It looked like an ordinary bottle of water, but it was on a plinth, labelled, described and in the programme of the whole festival.
“It was very, very clear what it was - a work of art.”
The work uses water taken from the threatened west Antarctic ice sheet, which is currently melting at the rate of 250 cubic kilometres a year, he said.
Mr Hill added: “Nobody has any idea what has happened to it. It was there and then it was gone.”

Scientists Create Zombie Dogs
US scientists have succeeded in reviving the dogs after three hours of clinical death, paving the way for trials on humans within years.
Pittsburgh’s Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject’s veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution.
The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity.
But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.
Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre.
However rather than sending people to sleep for years, then bringing them back to life to benefit from medical advances, the boffins would be happy to keep people in this state for just a few hours, but even this should be enough to save lives such as battlefield casualties and victims of stabbings or gunshot wounds, who have suffered huge blood loss.

Police Give Man Amputated Foot Back
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Ezekiel Rubottom now has his left foot back exactly where he wants it - in a bucket on the front porch. Police in Kansas have returned the amputated foot to him after seizing it during the weekend to check out just how it got there.
The 21-year-old man’s foot was amputated three weeks ago after a series of medical problems, and he started keeping it in a five-gallon bucket filled with formaldehyde.
It came to the attention of police after a call from a parent whose child reported seeing the severed foot. Officers who went to the home late Saturday night found the foot, and some of Rubottom’s friends, but no sign of Rubottom himself.
Unsure of what to make of the unusual discovery, police confiscated the severed foot and put it into evidence storage.
“We had to make sure that no crime had been committed,” Sgt. Dan Ward said.

Woman Convicted Because of Pet Pigs' Odor
HOBART, Ind. (AP) - The owner of pet pigs has been convicted of violating the city’s nuisance ordinance following complaints from neighbors about the obnoxious odor of the animals.
Debra Fields kept two 300-pound hogs - Bacon and Molly - as family pets in her home in the northwestern Indiana city. Earlier this month, during a court trial on the nuisance charge, she argued that under city code she is allowed to keep pigs in a residential area.
“The issue before the court is not whether the defendant may keep her pigs, but whether the odors generated are something her neighbor must accept,” City Judge William Longer wrote in a ruling last week. “They are not.”
The two pigs, according to evidence submitted during the trial, could generate as much as 35 pounds of solid waste and several gallons of liquid waste every day.
Fields testified there is no odor because she did not smell it, and that the odor detected by a Hobart code enforcement officer was attributable to swine flatulence.

State Sen. Pam Roach wants Washington residents to stop horsing around with their stallions - and other domesticated animals.
Roach, outraged by a Seattle man’s death after having sex with a horse, said she is proposing a law that would make having sex with an animal punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
“This is a crime against innocent life, and you know that the animal is not seeking this,” Roach said. “This is something a human being has decided to commit against another innocent being.”
Roach is planning to introduce the bill at the state’s next legislative session in December.
The proposed legislation stems from an investigation into an Enumclaw, Wash., farm, where a 45-year-old man died on July 2 from internal bleeding due to a perforated colon resulting from having sex with a horse.
When the story was published, Roach said dozens of residents sent e-mails calling for legislation to ban bestiality.

Surgeon Liable for Leaving Needle in Patient
NEW YORK - A judge found a physician negligent in a medical malpractice lawsuit accusing the doctor of losing a surgical needle in a patient’s abdomen and then closing the opening after he couldn’t find it.
State Supreme Court Justice Eileen Bransten found Dr. Douglas M. Heymann liable for the mishap during hernia surgery in 2001. The needle eventually lodged in 55-year-old Christopher Faas’ liver, where it remains.
The decision was released Wednesday; the amount of damages Faas will be awarded will be decided at trial.
Bransten dismissed Faas’ motion for a summary judgment against another surgeon, Dr. Joseph Iraci, and Lenox Hill Hospital, ruling those cases should be tried. The trials are scheduled for Aug. 2.
Heymann had called Iraci in to help him find the needle, and the two doctors spent hours searching for it, eventually closing up Faas’ abdomen without locating it.
Faas’ lawyer, Anthony Di Pietro, said Faas’ health is at great risk as a result of the mishap: “Every time he feels a pain, he wonders if this needle is killing him,” he said.
Michael Gallay, a lawyer for the defendants, declined to comment.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved two new diabetes drugs - Byetta and Symlin - that studies have proved help patients control their illness and cut back their eating.
“One of the lovely side effects of both drugs is people tend to lose weight,” said Dr. Paula Yutzy, a diabetes educator at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center.
Byetta comes from the saliva of a scary-looking lizard - the Gila monster. The drugs mimic the effects of hormones, helping to regulate the disease by controlling liver functions and digestion, as well as making patients feel more full.
Yutzy said she’s glad the medications have reached the public.

A new type of organism discovered in an Arctic tunnel came to life in the lab after being frozen for 32,000 years.
The deep-freeze bacteria could point to new methods of cryogenics, and they are the sort of biology scientists say might exist on Mars and other planets and moons.
“The existence of microorganisms in these harsh environments suggests - but does not promise - that we might one day discover similar life forms in the glaciers or permafrost of Mars or in the ice crust and oceans of Jupiter’s moon Europa,” said Richard Hoover, an astrobiologist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Other microbes have been discovered in similar frigid environments, sometimes clinging to pockets of liquid water in ice packs. And some microbes survive in ice as spores, but they need to be cultured to bring them to life.
NASA described the newfound critter as “the first fully described, validated species ever found alive in ancient ice.”
“They immediately started swimming when the ice melted,” Hoover told LiveScience, adding that the cryopreserved bacteria were instantly ready to eat and multiply.

PINOPOLIS, S.C. (AP) - Dogs don’t usually survive alligator attacks - especially when the reptile is three times the canine’s size. But Cooper, a 5-year-old golden retriever, is an exception. The spirited dog fought off a 14-foot, 700-pound alligator in a Lake Moultrie canal last month and lived to howl about it.

MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) - It’s been a hot, dry summer in this St. Louis suburb, but Rose Mary Cook knew there was no way she could have used $74,000 worth of water.
The city’s utility department claimed Cook used 10 million gallons of water last month, charging her $29,787 for water, $43,581 for sewer, plus $893 for municipal tax.
“Luckily, when I opened the bill, I was sitting down,” Cook said. “I could have filled every pool in southern Illinois and still not used that much water.”
Cook presented the bill to a public works employee at City Hall. The city quickly determined the whopping charge was the result of a broken meter and issued her a corrected bill for $32.66 - waiving Cook’s monthly water and sewer charges for her troubles.
“My daughter asked me if I was hoarding water during the drought,” Cook said. “I told her I would, but I don’t know where I would find 10 million gallon jugs.”

Police Remove 246 Cats From Two Homes
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Animal control officers have removed 187 cats from a house in Mount Vernon and 59 cats and one dog from a home in Falls Church, authorities said Monday.
In the Mount Vernon case, police went to a home on Ludgate Drive, Friday, to find Ruth Knueven, 82, living inside with 187 cats. Officers said the dead bodies of 86 more were left in trash bins outside.
Most of the surviving cats were sent to an animal shelter, but animal control officers said they have to go back and get some cats that are still living in the walls and chimney.
In another case, officers found 59 cats and a dog at a house on Hillsborough Drive in Falls Church on June 27. The bodies of 29 dead cats were also found on the property where authorities said Jane Baldinger, 58, lived. Animal control officials took the surviving cats and dog into their custody.
In both cases, neighbors complained of foul stenches surrounding the buildings.
Both women have been charged with failure to care for animals. Both homes have been condemned and officials were helping the women find temporary housing.

German Plane Lands On Speeding Porsche
BERLIN (Reuters) - A German pilot and driver escaped unhurt when a one-seater plane landed on top of a speeding car at a little-used airport, police in the western town of Bitburg said on Wednesday.
“It was a miracle that no one was hurt. There was considerable damage done to the plane and the car,” said Klaus Schnarrbach, spokesman for the Bitburg police.
The driver was racing at 160 kph (100 mph) with 11 other members of a local Porsche club at the airport, a former U.S. air base, when the single-engine plane accidentally landed on his roof. The shocked driver slammed on the brakes, sending the plane crashing to the ground.
“The airplane managed to stay steady on the roof at first,” said Schnarrbach, adding the pilot faced possible charges of negligence. “They probably couldn’t have done it that well if they had tried,” he said.

Astrologist Sues NASA Over Comet Crash
MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian astrologist who says NASA has altered her horoscope by crashing a spacecraft into a comet is suing the U.S. space agency for damages of $300 million, local media reported Monday.
NASA deliberately crashed its probe, named Deep Impact, into the Tempel 1 comet to unleash a spray of material formed billions of years ago which scientists hope will shed new light on the composition of the solar system.
“It is obvious that elements of the comet’s orbit, and correspondingly the ephemeris, will change after the explosion, which interferes with my astrology work and distorts my horoscope,” Izvestia daily quoted astrologist Marina Bai as saying in legal documents submitted before Monday’s collision.
A spokeswoman for a Moscow district court said initial preparations for the case were underway but could not say when the hearing would begin. NASA representatives in Moscow were unavailable for comment.

Tokyo - A Japanese mental health counsellor broke the record for reciting pi from memory in a marathon session from Friday to early on Saturday morning.
Newspaper pictures showed Akira Haraguchi, 59, screwing up his face with concentration as he recited pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, to 83 431 decimal places.
Starting at 9am on Friday, Haraguchi, from Chiba, near Tokyo, lost his place around noon. He quickly restarted, completing his feat of recall in the early hours of Saturday, media reports said.
Haraguchi hopes to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, replacing the current record-holder, also Japanese, who recited pi to 42 195 decimal places as a student, Kyodo news agency said.

Brad Kinzie was out watering his yard in the wee hours of the morning Saturday - trying to avoid the hottest period of the day - when an object whizzed by his head and landed.
“It came over my head, probably, about a foot and a half. I could feel the breeze,” Kinzie said. “It was silver and it kind of had red and black on the back of it and smoke.”
The object landed about 65 feet from where Kinzie was watering.
“I stood ... here looking at it, ‘cause it was still glowing. I says, ‘Wow,’” Kinzie said.
