Woman Arrested For House Filled With Animals, Feces
DELTONA, Fla. - Animal control officers in Volusia County cleaned out a house Wednesday that was packed with cats, dogs and animal feces. The homeowner of the house on 9th Street in Deltona was arrested.
Neighbors who complained about the smell tipped off investigators. Animal control officers had to wear respirators to go into the house to avoid being overcome by the odor.
Officers said nearly 50 cats were found in cages that were stacked on top of each other. The cages were lined with inches of feces.
“She’s got cats sitting on top of cats, sitting on top of cats in cages,” said Officer Kathy Frick, Deltona Animal Control.

Dad, Son Catch 3-Foot Gator While Fishing
BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A father and son fishing in Indian Creek in Bucks County netted a three-foot alligator on Sunday.
Bill Chase, his 3-year-old son, Ryan; his niece, and several other children from Bristol Township were fishing near the VFW War Memorial Softball Field along Indian Creek when some of the children spotted the alligator downstream.
They ran back to tell Chase, who called animal control officer William Kurko.
The alligator was held overnight at a nearby kennel. Reptile experts have been called to determine where to place the animal, Kurko said.
“It looked very healthy; it adapted well. But right now, it’s hissing like heck,” Kurko said Sunday.
Kurko said the alligator may be taken to the Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Newtown.

Police Rescue Man From Home Filled With 200 Rats
MINNEAPOLIS - The call to the police came in at 1 a.m. Thursday and sounded like a supermarket tabloid headline.
A man in the small Iron Range town of Gilbert, Minn., was being eaten alive in his home by rats, the caller said.
Skepticism turned to disbelief when they responded. More than 200 black rats - a colony originating from one pregnant pet-store type of rat that the mentally disabled man had taken in - had overrun the small house.
“In this occupation, you see a lot of things. Nothing really surprises us,” said Police Chief Mark Skelton. “You can never say that you’ve seen it all, because you haven’t.”
The 47-year-old man, who had been nibbled on a few times but seemed otherwise fine, was taken to a “safe house,” Skelton said. Read full story

BELLEVUE - A test drive in a car ended with a big splash and a daring rescue in Bellevue Friday morning, after a woman somehow drove the car into a swimming pool.
Police say it was just before 8 a.m. when 911 dispatchers began receiving calls that car had driven into the community pool at the Racquet Club Estates in northern Bellevue.
When police and firefighters arrived, they found the 20-year-old driver was still trapped inside the car. Firefighters dove into the water and broke the car’s sunroof and rear window with their fire axes and pulled the woman to safety.
Police say it all began when the woman was interested in buying a car from a friend and went to take a test drive. But when she started the car, she somehow mistook the gas for the brake.
The car jumped a curb and bolted out of the parking lot. It drove over a phone utility box, glanced off a tree, then crashed through an 8-foot fence and into the pool.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Texas woman has sued ABC’s popular reality show “Extreme Makeover” for more than $1 million claiming among other things that an abrupt cancellation of her appearance on the program led to her sister’s death.
Deleese Williams of Conroe, Texas, claims she came to Los Angeles to be a contestant on the show after undergoing a series of medical exams to determine if her crooked teeth and droopy eyes could be fixed and her small breasts enhanced, according the suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
The suit starts with the blunt description: “Deleese Williams is considered ugly” and says one doctor promised her “a Hollywood smile like Cindy Crawford.”

More Women Experiment With Bisexuality!
More women - particularly those in their late teens and 20s - are experimenting with bisexuality or at least feel more comfortable reporting same-sex encounters, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The survey, released Thursday by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, found that 11.5 percent of women, ages 18 to 44, said they’ve had at least one sexual experience with another woman in their lifetimes, compared with about 4 percent of women, ages 18 to 59, who said the same in a comparable survey a decade earlier.
For women in their late teens and 20s, the percentage rose to 14 percent in the more recent survey. About 6 percent of men in their teens and 20s said they’d had at least one same-sex encounter.
While those who conducted the survey took measures to protect respondents’ privacy, researchers say it’s unclear whether the figure for men was lower because they’re are more likely to avoid same-sex experiences or whether they’re not reporting them. Read full story

Football Player Wants to Amputate Finger
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - An Australian professional football player said Tuesday he plans to have one of his fingers amputated in an attempt to improve his game.
Brett Backwell, who plays Australian rules football for Glenelg, a suburb of the city of Adelaide in South Australia state, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. he has suffered from pain and restricted movement since he broke his left ring finger three years ago.
Doctors had suggested fusing the bones in the finger, but Backwell rejected the proposal.
He said he believed that amputating the finger was the only way to stop the pain and allow him to keep playing.
“To chop a finger off, that’s a bit drastic,” Backwell told the ABC. “But I love my footy (football), and love playing sport, and if that’s going to help me to succeed at this level then it’s something you’ve just got to do.”

Officials in Thailand are investigating claims by villagers who say they have seen an alien.
About 10 people from Huay Nam Rak claims to have spotted the alien in a nearby rice field, reports The Nation.

The family didn’t know the accident that killed him had involved alcohol, and the girl didn’t recognize her father’s formal first name when it was announced before the picture was shown last month.
The girl’s mother said she was traumatized by the experience.
Her attorney said police made a terrible mistake. He’s asking why 12-year-olds are shown mutilated dead bodies when they can’t drive for another four years.

Beijing - A restaurant in north-east China has been raided and closed for listing stir fried-tiger meat on its menu, a dish that turned out to be donkey dressed with tiger urine.
The ‘Hufulou’ restaurant in Hailin city in Heilongjiang province is located barely one kilometre from the Hengdaohezi Siberian Tiger Park, home to a species listed as one of the 10 most endangered in the world.
It was offering a dish of stir-fried tiger meat with hot peppers for 800 yuan (about R700), and raw tiger meat at 7 000 yuan a kilogram, the China Daily reported Thursday.
Diners could wash it down with a bottle of wine pickled with tiger bone.

POTHARAM, Thailand (AP) - Inside a dark room, realistic-looking “human body parts” are stacked on shelves and hanging on meat hooks. The place looks like a mortuary or the lair of a serial killer, but in fact, it’s a bakery. What appears to be putrefying body parts are the bread sculptures of 28-year-old art student Kittiwat Unarrom.
“Of course, people were shocked and thought that I was mad when they saw the works. But once they knew the idea behind it, they understood and became interested in the work itself, instead of thinking that I am crazy,” said the fine arts masters degree student.

Lisbon - A 41-year-old man who quit his job in Peru to travel to his native Portugal five months after getting his mother’s death certificate in the mail was stunned to find her alive and well, daily newspaper 24Horas reported on Friday.
Portuguese police sent the document to Joao Cunha in January and after saving up enough money he left his job as a hotel receptionist in Lima in May to travel to Portugal to look after his mother’s affairs, it said.
“It was a huge shock to discover that my mother had not died and was in fact alive,” he told the newspaper.
“It is unbelievable that, because of a mistake, this country caused me to lose my job and force me to come to Portugal for nothing. All because of a case of mistaken identity,” he added.
“I don’t have money to go back to Peru. I don’t have a job. And at my mother’s small house there is no room for me to sleep,” he said.
Cunha said he left his wife behind in Peru, where he has lived for 11 years.

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario - An enterprising young killer whale at an aquarium has apparently figured out how to use fish as bait to catch seagulls - and shared his strategy with his fellow whales.
Michael Noonan, a professor of animal behavior at Canisius College in Buffalo, made the discovery by accident while studying orca acoustics.
“One day I noticed one of the young whales appeared to have come up with a procedure for luring gulls down to the pool,” the professor said. “I found it interesting so I noted it in my log.”
First, the young whale spit regurgitated fish onto the surface of the water, then sank below the water and waited.
If a hungry gull landed on the water, the whale would surge up to the surface, sometimes catching a free meal of his own. Read full story

Man Finds Venomous Giant Centipede In His Apartment
LONDON - Aaron Balick expected to find a tiny mouse stirring around behind the TV in his apartment. Instead, he found a venomous giant centipede that somehow made its way from South America to Britain.
He trapped the 9-inch-long creature between a stack of books and put it in a plastic container.
“Thinking it was a mouse, I went to investigate the sound,” Balick said Wednesday. “The sound was coming from under some papers which I lifted, expecting to see the mouse scamper away.
“Instead, when I lifted the papers, I saw this prehistoric looking animal skitter away behind a stack of books.”
The next day Balick, 32, took it to Britain’s Natural History Museum, which identified the insect as a Scolopendra gigantea - the world’s biggest species of centipede. Read full story

Woman, 73, Accused of Shooting Husband
AUBURN, W.Va. (AP) - A 73-year-old woman has been accused of shooting her 69-year-old husband because she believed he contracted a venereal disease while having an affair with a neighbor.
“He was treated a few weeks ago, apparently for a venereal disease. That’s apparently where it (the shooting) came from,” said Trooper J.E. Stout of the State Police’s Harrisville detachment.
Mollie A. Hardbarger of Auburn is accused of shooting her husband Hallie once in the abdomen with a .22-caliber rifle on Tuesday. She was charged with malicious wounding.
Hallie Hardbarger was in critical condition Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg, said hospital spokeswoman Jill Parsons.
Mollie Hardbarger complained of chest pains after she was arrested Tuesday and also was taken to the hospital, police said. She was in good condition Wednesday, Parsons said.
“She is under 24-hour guard at the hospital. We’ll continue to do that until she’s released,” Stout said.
After she is released from the hospital, she will be arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court.
