Church Agrees To End Practice Of Swallowing Live Goldfish
FLORENCE, Ala. - The First Assembly of God Church has agreed to discontinue its practice of swallowing live goldfish as part of its Fear Factor ministry.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked for a ban on the practice. Youth minister Anthony Martin said earlier the goal of the exercise was to teach teens about fear.
“I do appreciate your concern and just wanted to let you know that this will never happen again,” Pastor Greg Woodall replied to PETA in a letter. “My views are a reflection of yours. We love God’s creatures and would never want to show them harm.”
As part of the Fear Factor ministry at the church, teenage participants were asked to swallow live goldfish. No one reportedly became ill during the goldfish phase of the program.
PETA thanked the church for the ban by sending a gift basket of vegan Swedish fish, a gummy candy, as an alternative to live fish.

Man Claims He's Superman, Jumps From Fourth-Floor Window
GRAZ, Austria - A man who claimed he was Superman and could fly was hospitalized early Tuesday after leaping from a fourth-floor window, authorities said.
Paramedics rushed the 23-year-old man to a hospital in the city of Graz, about 120 miles south of Vienna, after he jumped from a window and suffered head and back injuries, police said.
They said the man - who apparently had drunk several bottles of red wine before attempting the jump - appeared at the window ledge at around 4 a.m. and shouted: “I am Superman! Nothing can happen to me!”
The jumper, whose name was not released, landed on part of a lower section and roof, sparing him from more serious injuries, authorities said.

6-Foot Snake Found In N.J. Family's Toilet
A blocked drain at a home in North Plainfield, N.J., led to the discovery of a 6-foot snake in a family’s toilet, according to a Local 6 News report.
Pete and Debbie Bias suspected there was a problem with their home’s plumbing system after nearly a week of messy backups.
The blockage moved mysteriously from the toilet in the basement to the second-floor bathroom, according to the report.
The couple decided to move the toilet off its base to investigate the problem and found a 6-foot Brazilian Rainbow Boa named “Freddy.”
“I called my wife over, she took a look at it and she said, ‘Yeah, it looks like we have a snake in the drain,’” Pete Bias said.

A drunk Russian escaped unhurt after careering off a bridge in his car and landing in the branches of a tree 30ft below.
Nikolay Voronov, from Tomsk, was driving home after a night boozing with pals when he lost control of his Toyota Carina.
He smashed through barriers on the side of a bridge going over the River Ushaika, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.
But instead of plunging into the waters 60ft below, the car fell 30ft and landed in the top branches of the only tree within miles.
Rescue services who were called out by passersby who spotted the car perched on the top of the tree said Voronov was unhurt.
The car, which they managed to lower down from the tree using a winch, suffered only minimal damage, unlike these smashed up cars.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) - Maybe this Burmese python learned a lesson from the one that tried to eat an alligator but exploded because its prey was so big. This snake apparently took on an animal that never stood a chance - Frances, a 1-year-old Siamese cat.
Frances vanished last week from his owner’s home, but his whereabouts were possibly revealed Sunday. A snake expert says Frances is the bulge inside the 12-foot-long Burmese python.
“Poor baby. He was my favorite cat. I know Siamese (cats) are supposed to be distant, but he slept in my bed and everything,” said a distraught Elidia Rodriguez, the cat’s owner.
The snake was captured and taken to a nature preserve, where it will live in a glass cage.
Earlier this month, a 13-foot python had a run-in with a 6-foot American alligator in Everglades National Park, and neither animal survived. The python burst after it tried to swallow that alligator.

MIAMI (AP) - The alligator has some foreign competition at the top of the Everglades food chain, and the results of the struggle are horror-movie messy.
A 13-foot Burmese python recently burst after it apparently tried to swallow a live, six-foot alligator whole, authorities said.
The incident has heightened biologists’ fears that the nonnative snakes could threaten a host of other animal species in the Everglades.
“It means nothing in the Everglades is safe from pythons, a top-down predator,” said Frank Mazzotti, a University of Florida wildlife professor.
Over the years, many pythons have been abandoned in the Everglades by pet owners.
The gory evidence of the latest gator-python encounter - the fourth documented in the past three years - was discovered and photographed last week by a helicopter pilot and wildlife researcher. Read full story

MADISON, Wis. - A man smashed a display case at the Wisconsin Historical Society to steal a Revolutionary War-era book worth $5,000, authorities say.
Matthew Brooke, 26, was charged Friday with felony theft of library materials and criminal damage to property. He went to the Historical Society on Thursday, according to a criminal complaint, and smashed the window on a second-floor antique display case with his elbow.
He allegedly swiped the “Pennsylvania Evening Post” from inside the case.
The book is a collection of the newspaper’s issues dating from January to April 1777.
A police officer found the book stuck in the waistband of Brooke’s pants, the complaint said. Brooke told detectives he took the book because he wanted to read a story on page 106 about a historical figure named William Hill.

ALFRED, Ont. (CP) - Cows do it, even the odd deer or moose, but it’s a rare sight to see a tiger lying in the middle of an Ontario road.
But that’s what a driver near the town of Wendover, east of Ottawa, reported to police.
Turns out the large cat had ambled away from its enclosure at nearby Papanack Zoo.
Zoo workers were summoned and quickly tranquillized the animal in a backyard across the road, and took it back to captivity.
The zoo is trying to figure out how the tiger was able to leave its enclosure.
The family-owned and operated Papanack Zoo has been breeding exotic animals and birds since the early 1980s.

Judge Orders 17-Year-Old Girl Not To Have Sex
