15-Foot Tiger Shark Gets Mouthful Of Boat
A massive, hooked and tied female tiger shark attacked an inflatable boat Saturday during shark-tagging operations off this remote reef.
No one was injured, and the rigid-hulled inflatable was damaged but not disabled.
The shark, measured by marine biologists at 15 feet long, had been hooked on a research longline. Biologists under the guidance of shark researcher Carl Meyer of the University of Hawai’i’s Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology had hauled the huge animal alongside the 25-foot boat and tied a loop around its tail to help control it.

Nepal Wants Action Against Everest Stripper
Kathmandu - The head of the Nepal Mountaineering Association urged the government on Saturday to take action against a Sherpa who reportedly stripped off on top of Mount Everest.
The Himalayan Times had reported on Friday that the Nepali climbing guide, whose name it gave as Lakpa Tharke, stood naked for three minutes in freezing conditions on the 8 850m summit of the world’s highest peak.
If confirmed, he would be the first person known to have stripped at top Everest, considered by Nepali Buddhists as a god.

A swan has fallen in love with a plastic swan-shaped paddle boat on a pond in the German town of Muenster and has spent the past three weeks flirting with the vessel five times its size, a sailing instructor said Friday.
Peter Overschmidt, who operates a sailing school and rents the two-seat paddle boat on the Aasee pond, said the black swan with a bright red beak has not left the white swan boat’s side since it flew in one day in early May.

VILNIUS, Lithuania - Lithuanian police were so astonished by a breath test that registered 18 times the legal alcohol limit, they thought their device must be broken. It wasn’t.
Police said Tuesday 41-year-old Vidmantas Sungaila registered 7.27 grams per liter of alcohol in his blood repeatedly on different devices after he was pulled over Saturday for driving his truck down the center of a two-lane highway 60 miles from the capital, Vilnius.
Lithuania’s legal limit is 0.4 grams per liter.
“This guy should have been lying dead, but he was still driving. It must be an unofficial national record,” Saulius Skvernelis, director of the national police traffic control service, told the AP. “He was of high spirits and grinning the whole time he was questioned.”

The Scarborough plant, owned by Canada’s McCain Foods, the world’s largest producer of frozen fries, was emptied Friday after a worker spotted a shell tip among the potatoes as they were being cleaned for slicing.
“The police were called and the bomb squad advised a 100 meter exclusion zone should be set up,” said a McCain spokesman.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A man on the run for nearly 38 years since escaping from a California prison has been arrested in Oklahoma, authorities said on Friday.
Michael Smith, who escaped from Correctional Training Facility in Soledad on June 7, 1968, was arrested on Thursday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.
Smith escaped while serving the third year of a five-year-to-life sentence for first-degree robbery. His case was reopened in December 2003 and a special agent tracked him down in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
Smith is in jail in Oklahoma awaiting an extradition hearing, California prison officials said in a statement.

Girl, 10, Goes for Drive, Hits Other Cars
PENSACOLA, Fla. - A 10-year-old girl who drove off with her guardian’s sport utility vehicle with a toddler and a 5-year-old on board crashed the vehicle into several cars, authorities said.
The girl sideswiped several cars during her 15-minute drive Thursday night and reached speeds up to 50 mph, said Ted Roy, spokesman for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
“She was so little she had to go down and hit the gas and pop her head back up to see where she was going,” Roy said.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - A Labrador retriever rescued a 9-year-old survivor of Hurricane Katrina from a river after the boy’s raft hit a log and he fell overboard, authorities said.

Jacqueline Williams, 41, of Flint had an electricity bill of $1,662.08 and paid all of it, except for one cent. AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Bears killed and ate a monkey in a Dutch zoo in front of horrified visitors, witnesses and the zoo said Monday. In the incident Sunday at the Beekse Bergen Safari Park, several Sloth bears chased the Barbary macaque into an electric fence, where it was stunned.
It recovered and fled onto a wooden structure, where one bear pursued and mauled it to death.

Vilnius, Lithuania - A 44-year-old woman from western Lithuania has entered the Baltic state’s record books by giving birth to her 18th child, the Lietuvos Zinios daily reported on Friday.
Danute Bagociene’s latest child, her seventh son, weighed in at 3,7kg and is 28 years younger than her first-born, also a boy.

Police in Germany are hunting a dog snatcher who stole a pet and painted it in the black, red and gold of the German flag.
Owner Theresa Carl, 47, said: “They must have taken little Simba from my garden. I searched for him for hours in the local parks before returning home to find him covered in paint.
“I bet some horrid football fans did this to him, everyone is going mad in the run up to the World Cup.”
The paint had soaked into the eight-year-old Maltese Terrier‘s fur so much that it was stuck to his skin and he had to be completely shaved.
Police in Schleiden in the far west of the country are now investigating and hope to press charges of animal cruelty against the culprits.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - An elderly woman, who was bitten by an alligator while working in her backyard, beat back the reptile with a garden hose.
Constance Gittles, 74, of south Punta Gorda was watering plants Tuesday when a nearly 6-foot-long alligator bit her leg just above the ankle.
“I just whacked him right in the snout with the nozzle,” she said. “After that, he took off,” Gittles told the News-Press of Fort Myers.
Gittles received three puncture wounds and some smaller scrapes and abrasions from her confrontation with the alligator.
A trapper working with wildlife officials later caught the animal in a nearby pond. It will be killed and the hide and meat sold.

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Authorities say at least 35 dogs have been rescued from a filthy Pinellas Park home, and the dogs’ owner was taken into custody.
Scott Daly is animal shelter manager at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay. He says the animals had skin problems and hair loss, and they were attacking one another.
