Malaysia Draws Up List Of Unsuitable Names For Children
Kuala Lumpur (AFP) - Malaysian parents will no longer be allowed to give their children names deemed unsuitable by authorities, a report says.
According to the New Straits Times, the National Registration Department will not allow names with undesirable meanings in the languages used by the country’s three main ethnic groups.
Malaysia’s population of 26 million is dominated by some 60 percent Malays, 26 percent Chinese and eight percent Indians.
Department spokesperson Jainisah Mohd Noor was quoted by the newspaper as saying the list was compiled following input from various religious and cultural groups.
“We are just helping to disseminate the information we have,” Jainisah was quoted as saying in the report. Read Full Story

Man Accused Of Biting Off Rooster's Head
New York (AP) - A man accused of biting the head off his pet rooster was arrested Friday and faces up to a year in prison if convicted, an animal protection spokesman said.
A neighbor had complained about a dead rooster near his Manhattan apartment and agents found the body of the beheaded rooster on a fire escape, said Joe Pentangelo, spokesman for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The rooster’s head was not located.
Humberto Rodriguez, 52, told agents that he bit the rooster’s head off because he blamed it for injuring a pet pigeon that he also kept in the apartment, Pentangelo said. Read Full Story

Man Saves Dog Thrown From Window
Warsaw - A man was bruised but alive on Wednesday after a Saint Bernard dog thrown out a two-story window landed on him as he was walking down the street in the southern-Polish city of Sosnowiec.
The 110-pound dog was pushed out of the window by its drunken owner Monday, police said.
“The dog had a soft landing because it fell on a man,” said police spokesman Grzegorz Wierzbicki. “The dog escaped with just a few scratches.”
“The man was also more in a psychological state of shock than physically hurt,” Wierzbicki added.
The one-year-old dog, named Oskar, was placed in an animal shelter while police investigate its owners for animal abuse.

Burglar Left Finger Behind
A burglar was caught after he left his finger at the crime scene and police found his prints in their database.
Michael Baumgartner, 31, was spotted breaking into a leisure centre in Hamburg, Germany.
He fled when police arrived but a ring on his index finger caught on a metal fence and ripped his finger off.
Police found the severed digit on the ground and used it to track down the thief.
But it was too late to reattach the finger despite surgery at a local hospital.

Human Hand, Skulls Found At Stripper's Home
New York - A stripper from New Jersey faced criminal charges Wednesday after police found a severed hand and six human skulls in her home.
Linda Kay, 31, was due to be arraigned Wednesday for improper disposition of human remains. Police said she was arrested Friday.
Officers responded to a report of a man wanting to kill himself with a hammer, but instead discovered a hand inside a jar filled with formaldehyde on a dresser in a bedroom. Six human skulls were found in an upstairs bedroom, South Plainfield Police Capt. Paul Brembt said.

Man Steals Puppy By Putting It In His Pants
Authorities are investigating a canine caper in Plantation, Florida - a crime that was all caught on tape.
Security cameras caught a man walking around a pet store when he spotted a Maltese puppy he liked.
The man picked up the dog, stuffed it in his pants and walked out.
Store employees realized the puppy was missing soon after the dog-napper exited the store.
“We count the puppies every 15 to 20 minutes,” said pet store owner Larry Silvey. “We check the cribs, and we realized the puppy was stolen, so we went back, checked on the camera, and there he was, stealing the puppy.”

MEXICO CITY - Forget the salt and lime, you’ll need a mint to enjoy this tequila. Producer Tequila Ley .925 announced Saturday that it has sold a bottle of Mexico’s best-known beverage in a gold and platinum casing for a whopping $225,000.
“This is a really unique bottle of tequila and our client, a U.S.-based collector of fine wines and spirits, will treasure this prize to add to an already impressive collection,” said company CEO Fernando Altamirano in a news release. The buyer’s name was not disclosed.

A woman police officer moonlighting as a prostitute has got off with a caution in New Zealand.
The unidentified officer, stationed in the country’s biggest city Auckland, was discovered last year to have been a prostitute for a short time.
“The officer concerned has been counseled. Under police procedures this amounts to a censure,” Deputy Police Commissioner Lyn Provost said in a statement.
The woman police officer, who was understood to be having financial difficulties, had not asked permission to have a second job as a prostitute. Such applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.

KETCHUM, Idaho - It took surgery to save a 12-foot Burmese python after it swallowed an entire queen-size electric blanket - with the electrical cord and control box.
The blanket must have gotten tangled up in the snake’s rabbit dinner, owner Karl Beznoska said. He kept the blanket in the cage to keep the 60-pound reptile, named Houdini, warm.
“Somehow, he was able to unplug the electric cord,” Beznoska said Wednesday. “He at least wasn’t hooked up to the power. It might have been pretty warm there.”

Mich. Boy, 5, Takes Off In Grandma's SUV
YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A 5-year-old boy hopped behind the wheel of a sport utility vehicle and drove it several blocks looking for his mother following an argument with his grandmother, authorities said.
The child was not injured in his short drive last Wednesday, and his grandmother’s 2004 Cadillac Escalade was stopped without incident.
The boy, whose full name wasn’t released, started the truck, cranked up the stereo and stood on the driver’s seat to see over the steering wheel, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Dave Egeler told The Ann Arbor News.

Commercial Trade In Corpses Banned
BEIJING (Reuters) - China is to ban the trade and commercial use of corpses, further tightening controls on a transplant market that critics say has been beset by illegal trade in organs, often involving executed prisoners.
The rules, which take effect on August 1, bar all use of donated bodies except for medical research and require burial once research is complete.
“No organization or individual is allowed to accept body donations except medical institutes, medical schools, medical research institutes and forensic research institutes,” Xinhua news agency said Saturday.
Transport of bodies into and out of China for interment would require approval from civil affairs departments, customs and inspection and quarantine authorities, it said. Read Full Story

Maine Lobsterman Pulls Up Rare Lobster
BAR HARBOR, Maine - An eastern Maine lobsterman caught a lobster this week that looks like it’s half-cooked.
The lobster caught by Alan Robinson in Dyer’s Bay that is a typical mottled green on one side; the other side is a shade of orange that looks cooked.
Robinson, of Steuben, donated the lobster to the Mount Desert Oceanarium. Staff members say the odds or finding a half-and-half lobster are 1 in 50 million to 100 million. By comparison, the odds of finding a blue lobster are about 1 in a million.

ALOHA, Ore. - A woman who called 911 to get “the cutest cop I’ve seen” sent back to her home got a date all right - a court date.
The same sheriff’s deputy arrested her on charges of misuse of the emergency dispatch system.
Washington County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Thompson told KGW-TV of Portland it all started with a noise complaint called in last month by neighbors of Lorna Jeanne Dudash. The deputy sent to check on the complaint knocked on her door, then left.
Thompson said Dudash then called 911, asking that the “cutie pie” deputy return.

LOS ANGELES - With fertility drugs, Angela Magdaleno had triplets three years ago. Last week, she had quadruplets - without fertility drugs.
Her two boys and two girls were healthy and doing well Wednesday after being born July 6 by Caesarean section in what doctors said was a rare occurrence of multiple births.
Magdaleno, 40, said she was shocked when her doctor told her she was pregnant with four babies.
“I didn’t know what to do,” she said in Spanish as she rested at home. “But now I’m happy because they’re healthy and so am I.”
Still, she worries that she might be overwhelmed with the work and sometimes struggles with mixed emotions about the future.

MANILA - A 12-year-old boy survived an attack by a crocodile that was being kept as a pet near an elementary school on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, officials said on Tuesday.
The seven-foot (2.1-metre) reptile bit Ramon Palmares on the arm after he poked it and threw pebbles, said Basilio Rosal, a local official in Cotabato City.
“We weren’t aware that a crocodile exists in that house,” Rosal told reporters. “It poses real danger to many curious schoolchildren.”

LONDON - A 62-year-old child psychologist has given birth to a boy, becoming the oldest British woman to have a baby.
Patti Farrant - known professionally as Patricia Rashbrook - delivered her son, J.J., by Caesarean section on Wednesday, according to The Daily Mail newspaper. The baby was conceived after fertility treatments.
Farrant has three grown children from a previous marriage. It is the first child for her husband, John, 60, an education management consultant.

BEARSVILLE, N.Y. - There’s no way to prove Tata was the world’s oldest crow when he died Sunday at age 59. But an expert on crows says it’s possible.
Tata’s tale began in 1947 when a thunderstorm blew the fledgling out of his nest in a Long Island cemetery, a mishap that likely led to his long life. Injured and unable to fly, the bird was scooped up by a cemetery caretaker and brought to a local family with a reputation for taking care of animals, Tata’s most recent owner, Kristine Flones, told the Daily Freeman of Kingston.

Shocked Carly Coleman from Hailsham, East Sussex gave birth to 5lb 2oz Lilly-Ella shortly after her waters broke.
As Lilly-Ella arrived, they found 4lb 9oz Harry “hidden” behind her.

Man Prefers Jail To Being At Home With Grandfather
ROME - An Italian man escaped from house arrest and begged police to put him in jail because he could not bear living with his grandfather, his lawyer said Monday.
The 30-year old, who could only be identified by his initials A.M., had been placed under house arrest for six months in the Sardinian town of Sassari after a scuffle with a policeman.
But he escaped, and Sunday showed up at a police station in the northern city of Genoa, asking them to arrest him and put him in a cell.
“He said he could not face staying with his grandpa anymore,” defense lawyer Pietro Bogliolo told Reuters by phone.

Man Jumps On 10-Foot Alligator's Back To Save Dog
A man in South Carolina jumped on the back of a 10-foot alligator to save his girlfriend’s pet dog as it was being dragged into a lake, according to a Local 6 News report.
Brent Carey said he was at a park in Charleston with his girlfriend and her dog, Chance, when an alligator jumped out of the water and started to drag Chance into the lake.
Carey jumped on the alligator, grabbed it near the back legs and began to fight to free the dog.
“I could almost grab him and I thought I’m going to die right now, and Chance is probably already dead,” Carey said.

Hospital Has 6 Sets Of Twins In 32 Hours
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - It all began with Chastity Keeler, who delivered twin boys. Keeler gave birth at 9:05 a.m. and 9:06 a.m. Tuesday. Over the next 32 hours, five more mothers gave birth to twins at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital.
Sparrow nurses, doctors and officials think that’s probably a record for the hospital.
“We have a number of experienced nurses, and it’s the first time within their collective memory that we’ve had six sets of twins born in such close proximity,” Sparrow spokeswoman Nan Simons told the Lansing State Journal for a story Friday.
