Nepal Boy Claims To Be Shortest In World
KATMANDU, Nepal - Nepal’s shortest boy is waiting for word from the Guinness World Records, where he has applied to be named the shortest in the world, his supporters said on Wednesday.
Khagendra Thapa Magar, 14, is only 20 inches tall and weighs 10 pounds.
According to Min Bahadur Thapa, president of the Khagendra Thapa Magar Foundation, they are expecting to receive a reply from London-based Guinness World Records in the next few days. The foundation was set up to collect funds for the boy.
There was no listing on the Guinness World Records’ web site on a shortest boy category, but Thapa claimed their closest competitor was 25 inches tall.
The boy and family members are currently touring south Nepal, seeking support for the foundation.

Woman Crashes When Teaching Dog To Drive
BEIJING (AP) - A woman in Hohhot, the capital of north China’s Inner Mongolia region, crashed her car while giving her dog a driving lesson, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday.
No injuries were reported although both vehicles were slightly damaged, it said.
The woman, identified only be her surname, Li, said her dog “was fond of crouching on the steering wheel and often watched her drive,” according to Xinhua.
“She thought she would let the dog ‘have a try’ while she operated the accelerator and brake,” the report said. “They did not make it far before crashing into an oncoming car.”
Xinhua did not say what kind of dog or vehicles were involved but Li paid for repairs.

MARTINSBURG — A Martinsburg man charged with felony child abuse Wednesday allegedly stapled his 16-year-old daughter’s ear and leg because she refused to give him her MySpace.com account password, according to court documents obtained by The Journal Thursday.
The name of the36-year-old man will not be published to protect the identity of the victim.
He was arrested Wednesday at his residence on Faulkner Avenue at about 3:15 p.m. by Patrolman Eric Neely of the Martinsburg City Police Department, police said.

A man from the Urals region of Russia was sentenced Tuesday to 2.5 years behind bars for killing his neighbor’s dog and making a barbecue from it.
Interfax reported that Dmitri Purigin, 29, was having a barbecue with friends in front of his house in February 2006. His neighbor’s son, aged 11, was walking his dog, a stray mongrel he talked his parents into taking in.
Purigin approached the boy, snatched the leash away from him and went off with the dog.
When the boy’s mother came home later that day, it was too late to save the animal. The dog had been killed, skinned and part of the meat had been barbecued and eaten. Some was left in the snow for later, with the bloody skin lying nearby. Read Full Story

'Hybrid mutant' Found Dead In Maine
TURNER, Maine - Residents are wondering if an animal found dead over the weekend may be the mysterious creature that has mauled dogs, frightened residents and been the subject of local legend for half a generation.
The animal was found near power lines along Route 4 on Saturday, apparently struck by a car while chasing a cat. The carcass was photographed and inspected by several people who live in the area, but nobody is sure exactly what it is.
Michelle O’Donnell of Turner spotted the animal near her yard about a week before it was killed. She called it a “hybrid mutant of something.”

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli woman’s breast implants saved her life when she was wounded in a Hizbollah rocket attack during Israel’s war with the Lebanese group, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday.
Doctors found shrapnel embedded in the silicone implants, just inches from the 24-year-old’s heart.
“She was saved from death,” said a spokesman for Nahariya Hospital in northern Israel. The woman has been released from hospital.

Bodies of extinct Ice Age mammals, such as woolly mammoths, that have been frozen in permafrost for thousands of years may contain viable sperm that could be used to bring them back from the dead, scientists said yesterday.
Research has indicated that mammalian sperm can survive being frozen for much longer than was previously thought, suggesting that it could potentially be recovered from species that have died out.
Several well-preserved mammoth carcasses have been found in the permafrost of Siberia, and scientists estimate that there could be millions more.
Last year a Canadian team demonstrated that it was possible to extract DNA from the specimens, and announced the sequencing of about 1 per cent of the genome of a mammoth that died about 27,000 years ago.

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese man was arrested this week after making 37,760 silent calls to directory inquiries because he wanted to listen to the “kind” voices of female telephone operators.
The 44-year-old has admitted to allegations of obstructing the operations of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. by making up to 905 calls a day from his mobile phone, the daily Mainichi Shimbun said on its Web site.
“When I made a complaint call once, the operator dealt with it very kindly, so I wanted to hear these women’s voices,” the paper quoted him as telling police in Hiroshima, western Japan.
Police believe the calls, made between March and July this year, caused psychological distress to more than 100 telephone operators, the Mainichi said.

WILDWOOD, Fla. - A man riding a personal watercraft on the Suwannee River was injured after a 4-foot-long sturgeon jumped out of the water and hit him, wildlife officials said.
Blake Nicholas Fessenden, 23, was heading north on the Suwannee River Sunday just north of the Hart Springs Sand Bar when he was hit and fell off the craft, according to a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Fessenden was knocked unconscious.
His girlfriend was riding another watercraft behind him and was able to get to Fessenden and hold his head above water before passengers on another vessel arrived to pull him from the water, officials said.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - A team of surgeons in western Serbia earlier this week took out eight nails, a knife, a pen, a screw, a spoon, a clothes-peg and other, smaller objects, from a young man’s stomach, one of the doctors said Wednesday.
“We were astonished,” said Dr. Maja Gulan, who helped perform the operation Monday in Uzice, 70 miles southwest of Belgrade.
“We have seen people swallow various things, but never this many,” she added.
The identity of the patient has not been revealed. The doctors said he had suffered no major damage to his internal organs, and was successfully recovering.
The case was initially reported by a concerned relative who saw him swallowing the objects, doctors said.
