Mouse Found in Christmas Cracker
Pulling crackers is a tradition on Christmas day but one Invercargill woman found her cracker contained a macabre surprise - a corpse.
“Everytime I closed my eyes last night night all I could see was this mouse poking out of the cracker.” Betty Lawrence said she had taken the crackers to her daughter’s house in Waikiwi, where she was part of a party of 20 family being hosted for Christmas dinner. Dinner was followed by pulling the crackers, which each contained one paper hat, one joke and a sticker.
“We set off a couple when we found the mouse,” she said. There was some prior warning of what was to come, Mrs Lawrence said.

Cards From Heaven Have Dead Man Talking
Even in death, Chet Fitch is a card. Fitch, known for his sense of humor, died in October at age 88 but gave his friends and family a start recently: Christmas cards, 34 of them, began arriving - written in his hand with a return address of “Heaven.”
The greeting read: “I asked Big Guy if I could sneak back and send some cards. At first he said no; but at my insistence he finally said, ‘Oh well, what the heaven, go ahead but don’t (tarry) there.’ Wish I could tell you about things here but words cannot explain.
“Better get back as Big Guy said he stretched a point to let me in the first time, so I had better not press my luck. I’ll probably be seeing you (some sooner than you think). Wishing you a very Merry Christmas. Chet Fitch”

The Entire Old Testament in Hebrew on a Pinhead

In a nanotechnology breakthrough, scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have printed the entire Old Testament onto a silicone chip smaller than a pinhead (less than 1/1000th of an inch).
The idea to write the Old Testament on such a tiny surface was conceived by Technion Professor Uri Sivan of the Faculty of Physics, who is also head of the university’s Russell Berrrie Nanotechnology Institute.
The text was written using a focused ion beam (FIB) generator that shot tiny particles called Gallium ions onto a gold surface covering a base layer of silicone.

Chinese Police Dog May Teach Pandas To Fight
Scientists in China may use a police dog to teach pandas to fight after the first artificially bred panda released into the wild was apparently killed after a battle with other animals.
The Wolong giant panda breeding centre plans to have four pandas raised in captivity live with a specially trained police dog or other animals, the Chengdu Daily quoted reserve officials as saying. The officials could not be reached for comment.
The pandas would learn how to protect themselves by observing the dog, increasing their chances of survival when they were eventually released into the mountainous wilds of the far western province of Sichuan.

Seven Medical Myths Even Doctors Believe
Popular culture is loaded with myths and half-truths. Most are harmless. But when doctors start believing medical myths, perhaps it’s time to worry.
In the British Medical Journal, researchers looked into several common misconceptions, from the belief that a person should drink eight glasses of water per day to the notion that reading in low light ruins your eyesight.
“We got fired up about this because we knew that physicians accepted these beliefs and were passing this information along to their patients,” said Dr. Aaron Carroll, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine. “And these beliefs are frequently cited in the popular media.”

Graduate Students Create Splinter, The Wooden Supercar
A group of graduate students from North Carolina State University are working on a thesis project that would have the lads at Morgan green with envy, a one-off supercar built mostly from wood called Splinter.
The vision of industrial design student Joe Harmon, the Splinter isn’t being built as an expanded showpiece, or automotive curio. Instead it’s an honest attempt to explore the possibilities and limitations of wood as a building medium.
Though the planned car sounds almost absurdly ambitious, a mid-engine 600 horsepower supercar built of wood, Harmon and his team have already developed a few features that are interesting, and innovative, even if they may not ever completely work.

Red Fluorescent Cat Cloned
Researchers found a way to clone pet cats five years ago. Now they can play a trick on their genes to change their color.
A Gyeongsang National University team said they have succeeded in cloning cats after modifying a gene to change their skin color. Because of the red fluorescence protein in their skin cells, the three Turkish Angola kittens look reddish under ultraviolet light, the researchers said.
The red cloned cat research is expected to be utilized in dealing with certain genetic diseases in animals and humans. It will also help reproduce rare animals, such as tigers and wildcats, which are on the verge of extinction, the team said. Read Full Story

Intelligent Bra Battles Breast Bounce
A bra with sensors built into the fabric could help scientists make exercise a more comfortable experience for women.
Australian researchers believe their creation will help bra makers make their future designs a better fit.
Exercising wearing a poorly-fitting bra can raise the risk of long-term injury.
They tested women with size 36D and 38DD bra sizes, and recorded 6.9cm (2.7inches) of breast movement.
The findings, in the Journal of Biomechanics, will allow more accurate laboratory analysis of breast bounce during exercise.

Record-size Spitting Cobra Found in Kenya
A new species of giant spitting cobra, measuring nearly nine feet and possessing enough venom to kill at least 15 people, has been discovered in Kenya, a conservation group said on Friday.
WildlifeDirect said the cobras were the world’s largest and had been identified as unique. The species has been named Naja Ashei after James Ashe, who founded Bio-Ken snake farm on Kenya’s tropical coast where the gigantic serpents are found.
“A new species of giant spitting cobra is exciting and reinforces the obvious - that there have to be many other unreported species but hundreds are being lost as their habitats disappear under the continued mismanagement of our planet,” said the group’s chairman, Kenyan environmentalist Richard Leakey.
