Déjà Vu Site In The Brain?
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery, which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, is now being studied for its potential to treat a variety of conditions.
A new study found that hypothalamic DBS performed in the treatment of a patient with morbid obesity unexpectedly evoked a sense of déjà vu and detailed personal memories.
Led by Andres Lozano, Professor of Neurosurgery and Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience and his team at the Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, researchers conducted an experimental study to treat a 50-year-old man with a lifelong history of obesity in whom a variety of treatment approaches had failed.

A hospital patient in Finland found a mouse head among the steamed vegetables on his plate.
“Understandably, he lost his appetite,” said Sakari Kela, chief administrator at the Northern Karelia Central Hospital.
The health of the patient in Joensuu, eastern Finland, had not been compromised by the dead rodent, Kela said on Saturday. The severed head most likely originated in a bag of Belgian vegetables.

World's Weirdest Creatures Just Got Weirder
A gigantic, ancient relative of the newt, a drawing-pin sized frog, a limbless, tentacled amphibian and a blind see-through salamander have all made it onto a list of the world’s weirdest and most endangered creatures.
ZSL EDGE programme is highlighting some of the world’s most extraordinary creatures currently threatened with extinction.
This year ZSL scientists have assessed all amphibian species according to how Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) they are.
“The EDGE amphibians are amongst the most remarkable and unusual species on the planet and yet an alarming 85% of the top 100 are receiving little or no conservation attention and will become extinct if action is not taken now.”

Teach Your Brain To Stretch Time
Mike Hall has taught himself to stretch time. He uses his powers to make him a better squash player. “It’s hard to describe, but it’s a feeling of stillness, like I’m not trapped in sequential time any more,” he says. “The ball still darts around, but it moves around the court at different speeds depending on the circumstances. It’s like I’ve stepped out of linear time.”
Hall, a sports coach from Edinburgh, UK, is talking about a state of mind known as “the zone”. He puts his abilities down to 12 years of studying the martial art t’ai chi, and now makes a living teaching other sportspeople how to “go faster by going slower”. Read Full Story

Artist Creates 20ft Figure Out of Rock without Using a Hammer or Chisel

An artist has spent three years scouring the globe for individual rocks which resemble body parts - to make a remarkable 2.5-tonne sculpture of the human form. Duncan Elliott, 43, hauled stones ranging from the size of marbles up to 90kg from fields and mountains across Europe.
Each rock he used was precisely the right form - and proportionally the right size - for the body part it represents and has not been chipped or shaped. The biggest is a 90kg piece of Mendip limestone, for the belly. The smallest are pieces of limestone from Crete weighing less than a gramme each, for the fingernails.
Mysterious 'Ghostly' Face of Child Appears in Cell Phone Photo

At first glance, it seems to be an ordinary snap of a group of young people. But look more carefully and there appears to be an extraordinary, ghostly presence among them. Peeping out between the knees of two of the girls is the face of a child.
The eerie image - clear enough to show a pair of eyes, a nose, a mouth and hair - was captured by 17-year-old Matthew Summers on his mobile phone as he and his friends were preparing to go out.
“I zoomed in to my sister’s mate’s little sister who was crying and I saw a face,” Matthew said. “You can see all the facial expressions and everything.

From his high position in the stable yard, Digger has become used to looking down on the world.
Indeed, he is so high and mighty that his handler Lisa McFarlane is finding it hard to chart his exact size.
She is pictured here with her measuring bar which extends to 19 hands, and Digger stands well clear of the top.
Best estimates put the Clydesdale horse at 19 hands and two inches (6ft 6in) - on a par with Britain’s biggest living horse.

Miraculous Creation of Nature

Snowflakes and snow crystals are made of ice, and pretty much nothing more. A snow crystal, as the name implies, is a single crystal of ice. A snowflake is a more general term; it can mean an individual snow crystal, or a few snow crystals stuck together, or large agglomerations of snow crystals that form “puff-balls” that float down from the clouds.

Scientists Discovered the Secret to the Perfect Legs
Scientists have discovered the secret to the perfect legs - an extra five per cent.
Research found that the average woman - at around 5ft 4in tall with an inside leg measurement of 29in - would need shapely 30.5in legs to reach perfection.
However, very long legs are not necessarily better because the study also showed that those with an extra 10 per cent were actually rated as less attractive.
The findings could explain the sex appeal of stars such as Kylie Minogue who despite being only 5ft tall, has topped polls of the “best celebrity legs”.

“The idea would be to develop transplantable blood vessels or whole organs that are made from your own cells,” said Doris Taylor, Ph.D., director of the Center for Cardiovascular Repair, Medtronic Bakken professor of medicine and physiology, and principal investigator of the research.

Time May Not Exist
No one keeps track of time better than Ferenc Krausz. In his lab at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, he has clocked the shortest time intervals ever observed. Krausz uses ultraviolet laser pulses to track the absurdly brief quantum leaps of electrons within atoms.
The events he probes last for about 100 attoseconds, or 100 quintillionths of a second. For a little perspective, 100 attoseconds is to one second as a second is to 300 million years.
But even Krausz works far from the frontier of time. There is a temporal realm called the Planck scale, where even attoseconds drag by like eons. It marks the edge of known physics, a region where distances and intervals are so short that the very concepts of time and space start to break down.

Amber Fossils Reveal Ancient France Was A Jungle
Research on a treasure trove of amber has yielded evidence that France once was covered by a dense tropical rainforest with trees similar to those found in the modern-day Amazon.
The report on 55-million-year-old pieces of amber from the Oise River area in northern France is scheduled for the Jan. 4 issue of ACS’ Journal of Organic Chemistry.
In the new study, Akino Jossang and colleagues used laboratory instruments to analyze the fossilized tree sap in an effort to link specific samples of amber to specific kinds of trees. The amber remained intact over the ages, while the trees from which it oozed disappeared.
