However, it has now been discovered that birds are not only capable of discerning their enemies through chemical signals, but that they also alter their behaviour depending on the perceived level of risk of predation.
The use of smell to detect chemical signals can be useful for birds in various situations, such as feeding and orientation. However, they can greatly increase their chances of survival if they can tell whether or not the smell they have detected is associated with a predator.

A chihuahua in a scuba suit has won a dog fashion show in the Philippines. Five-year-old Mondex wore a four-legged wetsuit, air bottle, four little flippers and goggles for the day.
Mondex was joined by other pampered dogs in the pet fashion show. He faced stiff competition from Tucker, another five-year-old chihuahua, who was dressed as a cowboy but eventually emerged victorious.
Fat Inmate Sues Jail Over Weightloss
An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing a county in Arizona, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn’t happy that he’s down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn’t provide inmates with enough food.
According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

Scientists studying two very ancient elephants surmised that they were probably semi-aquatic mammals, eating freshwater plants.
“Molecular data from modern elephants share a common ancestry with the sirenians - aquatic sea cows and dugongs,” said Alexander Liu of Oxford University, co-author of the report.
“Elephants may have an ancestor which was amphibious in its mode of life and we wanted to know if Moeritherium or Barytherium (existing 37 million years ago) was this semi-aquatic ancient relative.”

Detroit police said they believe an elderly woman has been living with the corpse of her dead sister on her kitchen floor - possibly for the last three years.
Investigators said the corpse was partially mummified and portions of the body appeared to have been eaten by a dog and cat living at the residence.
Police said the woman - who appeared to be suffering from mental problems - was taken to a crisis center for treatment. They said they made a visit to the home after a neighbor phoned police to report she had not seen the deceased woman for a long time.

Man Arrested After Trying To Fill Up Imaginary Car
A man was arrested at a Kentucky gas station after he was reported to be trying to pump fuel into an imaginary car.
According to reports, Louisville police found Joshua L. Moore at the petrol station, where workers alleged he had been trying to pump petrol into a car that wasn’t there, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The officers immediately noted what appeared to be a strong smell of marijuana.
After being arrested, Moore was found to have ‘two large baggies’ of marijuana on his person, as well as an impressive amount of ecstasy.
According to authorities, he also had a mobile phone and a large amount of money, which they take as evidence that he was involved in trafficking the drugs.

Chinese Man Eaten By Zoo Tiger
A tiger devoured a mentally ill man who entered the animal’s zoo cage in northeast China.
Zhang Yachun disappeared from his home in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province, on March 24 and five days later police told his parents he had been eaten by a tiger in a nearby zoo, the China news service reported, citing a Harbin newspaper.
“Only two legs and his skull were left,” the report said. Zhang’s grieving parents said their 37-year-old son suffered mental illness and “especially loved tigers”.
China has a poor record of keeping people away from dangerous zoo and circus animals.

A German woman is suing doctors after she checked in to have wrinkles removed - and woke up with a new pair of breasts. Ingrid Bruelling, 33, had the operation in the German city of Kassel.
She wanted to give herself firmer skin and remove the wrinkles after losing 16 stone on a crash diet. But when she woke up after the operation she found doctors had put two silicone implants into her breasts, increasing their size from a C cup to a D.
Doctors said the woman should not complain as the best way to tighten the skin and remove the wrinkles was to make her breasts bigger.
