Super-sensitive Explosives Detector
Using a laser and a device that converts reflected light into sound, researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory can detect explosives at distances exceeding 20 yards.
The method is a variation of photoacoustic spectroscopy but overcomes a number of problems associated with this technique originally demonstrated by Alexander Graham Bell in the late 1880s.
Most notably, ORNL researchers are able to probe and identify materials in open air instead of having to introduce a pressurized chamber, which renders photoacoustic spectroscopy virtually useless for security and military applications.

Maggot Cheese

Casu marzu, which means “rotten cheese”, is found in Sardinia, Italy, and is notable for containing live insect larvae. The cheese comes with dangers including intestinal larval infestation. Because of these dangers, the cheese was illegal until 2005. The only reason it was legalised is that the cheese is now made with raised, not wild, flies.
Convict Says Sorry With A Flower
A prisoner who escaped from a US jail left a toilet paper origami flower behind as his way of saying sorry.
When he was later recaptured, Luis Camacho-Mendoza said leaving the flower was an “act of remorse”, say police.
Camacho-Mendoza escaped from a detention centre in Crawford County, Arkansas, reports the local Times Record newspaper.
He was found a day later hiding in a cupboard at a nearby house after a tip-off and arrested by a SWAT team who returned him to custody.
Ken Howard, of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, said his head and most of his upper-body were tucked in a pillow case and the rest of his body was hidden by a pile of clothing when he was found.

Dachshund Pushes Wheelchair

A dachshund dog has become a local celebrity in China for his skills in pushing a wheelchair. Two-year-old Guai Guai runs underneath the wheelchair pushing the foot rests with his front legs.
He is so small - and fast - that many passers-by assume the wheelchair is motorised, reports Dahe Network. His owner, Ms Wang of Zhengzhou, says he learnt to push her father’s wheelchair when he was a puppy and used to hide underneath it.
"When I pushed my father on a walk, Guai Guai would also be under the seat, two forelegs on the steps, walking with only the hind legs,” she said. “He couldn’t keep up when he was young and always stumbled. But when we took him out, he would run back again under the seat.” Gradually Guai Guai learnt to push the wheelchair himself.

DNA Study Unlocks Mystery To Diverse Traits In Dogs
What makes a pointer point, a sheep dog herd, and a retriever retrieve? Why do Yorkshire terriers live longer than Great Danes? And how can a tiny Chihuahua possibly be related to a Great Dane?
Dogs vary in size, shape, color, coat length and behavior more than any other animal and until now, this variance has largely been unexplained.
Now, scientists have developed a method to identify the genetic basis for this diversity that may have far-reaching benefits for dogs and their owners.

Teeth And Jewelry Don't Mix
Skin piercings might be the rage among teens, but researchers from Tel Aviv University have found good reasons to think twice about piercing one’s tongue or lip.
Dr. Liran Levin, a dentist from the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, School of Dental Medicine at Tel Aviv University has found that about 15 to 20 percent of teens with oral piercings are at high risk for both tooth fractures and gum disease. Resulting tooth fractures as well as periodontal problems, he says, can lead to anterior (front) tooth loss later in life.
High rates of fractures due to piercings are not found in other age groups, and cases of severe periodontal damage in teens without oral piercings are similarly rare, says Dr. Levin, who conducted the study with partners Dr. Yehuda Zadik and Dr. Tal Becker, both dentists in the Israeli Army.

Police gave chase to a UFO after it almost collided with their helicopter, it is reported. The police helicopter crew gave chase over Cardiff.
The mystery aircraft zoomed straight at the chopper as the three-man cop crew prepared to land near a military base. The pilot was forced to bank sharply to avoid being hit by the mystery aircraft as the helicopter was returning to the Ministry of Defence base of St Athan, near Cardiff.
The three crew described the UFO as ‘flying saucer-shaped’. They gave chase, getting as far as the North Devon coast before they ran low on fuel, it was reported. The incident happened two weeks ago, on June 7.
A source told the newspaper: “They are convinced it was a UFO. It sounds far-fetched, but they know what they saw.

Woman's £90m Electricity Bill

A Cambridge mother-of-two opened her electricity bill - to find a demand for £90million.
Alison Turner was stunned when she opened the bill from suppliers npower, especially as she is on a meter anyway. Her bill was for the equivalent of leaving lights on for 1,900 years, reports the Daily Mirror.
Alison, 50, said: “I know electricity bills have gone up recently, but this is ridiculous. I was shocked to say the least. “It’s lucky they didn’t send it to a pensioner, they might have keeled over. I shouldn’t even be getting any bills from them because I pay in advance."
Npower cancelled the bill. A spokesman said: “We have systems to ensure these errors are not made, so I’m at a loss to say why this happened. “We take customers’ bills very seriously and we will look into this mistake."

Homosexual Brain Similar To Opposite Sex's
Swedish researchers have found that some physical attributes of the homosexual brain resemble those found in the opposite sex.
Some psychological tests have shown differences between men and women in the extent to which they employ the brain’s hemispheres in verbal tasks.
Other research has hinted that homosexuals may exhibit the tendencies of the opposite sex in brain behavior unrelated to sexual activity.

Man And Dog Survive Cliff Plunge
Authorities say a man and his dog survived a 200-foot fall down a remote cliff face in Dorset. Coast guards say the man’s car went over a cliff near the town of Swanage early Sunday morning. Local police believe the man was thrown clear of his vehicle when it fell halfway down the 400-foot cliff.
They say the man was found barely conscious near the crumpled wreckage of his vehicle. The car had crashed onto a large ledge on the cliff face. Both the man’s legs were broken.
The coast guards say the man’s dog, a black New Zealand sheepdog named Zin Zan, could not be found at the scene - but the dog later made its own way home and was discovered underneath the kitchen table.

World-record Supercomputer Mimics Human Sight Brain Mechanisms
Less than a week after Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Roadrunner supercomputer began operating at world-record petaflop-per-second data-processing speeds, Los Alamos researchers are already using the computer to mimic extremely complex neurological processes.
Welcome to the new frontier of research at Los Alamos: science at the petascale.
The prefix “peta” stands for a million billion, also known as a quadrillion. For the Roadrunner supercomputer, operating at petaflop/s performance means the machine can process a million billion calculations each second.

Cat Adopts Rat

A pet cat in China has adopted a rat which she is nursing alongside her four kittens. Sun Shujun, of Yantai City, says the rat has been living with her cat since the kittens were born four weeks ago.
Sun, 81, says that a neighbour came to see the kittens on the day they were born and was amazed to see a rat suckling alongside them.
"At the beginning, I thought I must have seen wrong. So I took a flashlight and had a clear look,” said the neighbour. The rat not only drinks cat’s milk, but also plays with its kitten ‘brothers and sisters’.

World's Oldest Woman Had Normal Brain
A 115-year-old woman who remained mentally alert throughout her life had an essentially normal brain, with little or no evidence of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study in the August issue of Neurobiology of Aging.
The findings question the assumption that Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia will inevitably develop, if people live long enough.
“Our observations suggest that, in contrast to general belief, the limits of human cognitive function may extend far beyond the range that is currently enjoyed by most individuals, and that improvements in preventing brain disorders of aging may yield substantial long-term benefits,” according to a study led by Prof. dr. Gert Holstege of University Medical Centre Groningen, The Netherlands.

Toad Survives 40 Minutes In Dog’s Stomach

A Cane toad has survived after being eaten by a dog and spending 40 minutes in the animal’s stomach. The super toad was eventually vomited up by the dog and hopped away shaken but seemingly unharmed.
The dog also lived to bark another day - proving she’s as tough as her owner, Darwin rugby league star Jackson Crews. Bella was playing in her backyard in Bakewell, Palmerston, when she swallowed the toad.
Mr Crews said it was probably Bella’s greedy nature that had saved her life. “She swallowed it whole - that’s probably why she survived,’’ Mr Crews said.

Alien-Like Being Born From A Cow In Thailand

This dead alien-like being found in a small town in Thailand was claimed to be born from a cow and seems at first to be a severe case of birth malformation defect. A closer examination however reveal that the alien being resembles too much of a human baby with its front legs looking more like hands than feet.
In the form of a ritual, the local residents pour baby powder onto the dead body and burnt incense in their belief of cleansing the area of evil and hopeful that it will be reincarnated peacefully.

Excessive Mobile Phone Use Affects Sleep In Teens
Teenagers who excessively use their cell phone are more prone to disrupted sleep, restlessness, stress and fatigue, according to a research abstract that will be presented on June 9 at SLEEP 2008, the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS).
The study, authored by Gaby Badre, MD, PhD, of Sahlgren’s Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, focused on 21 healthy subjects, between 14-20 years of age, with regular working/studying hours and without sleep problems.
The subjects were broken up into two groups: a control group (three men, seven women) and the experimental group (three men, eight women). The control group made less than five calls and/or sent five text messages a day, while the experimental group made more than 15 calls and/or sent 15 text messages a day.

Memory Training Can Increase Intelligence
Can human beings rev up their intelligence quotients, or are they stuck with IQs set by their genes at birth? Until recently, nature seemed to be the clear winner over nurture.
But new research, led by Swiss postdoctoral fellows Susanne M. Jaeggi and Martin Buschkuehl, working at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, suggests that at least one aspect of a person’s IQ can be improved by training a certain type of memory.
Most IQ tests attempt to measure two types of intelligence - crystallized and fluid intelligence. Crystallized intelligence draws on existing skills, knowledge and experiences to solve problems by accessing information from long-term memory.

Star Trek-style 3-D Displays Make Their Debut
Star Trek’s holodeck is a famous science fiction concept. Crewmembers could walk through the garden of their childhood home, re-enact famous historical events or watch full, 3-D performances of famous plays.
It was a rich source of story lines for the Star Trek writers because the holodeck offered so many opportunities to work, rest and play.
Crewmembers could also learn by using simulations to acquire new skills or execute training drills. They could simulate surgery, flight, and engine repairs in a truly realistic environment.
The holodeck is still science fiction, but last year researchers took the first, confident steps towards its realisation with the Coherent project.

Elvis The Parrot Terrorising Village

He is not even human but Elvis ruffles so many feathers he is being threatened with an Asbo. Elvis the parrot has been accused of dive-bombing people and wrecking street lights when owner Edward Pikul lets him out.
‘He is a lovely pet and would never harm anybody. If I had to imprison him in his cage, I would rather get rid of him,’ said 49-year-old Mr Pikul. ‘It’s true Elvis has a mischievous streak, he knows a few swear words and his shriek is quite loud but he’s an absolute joy to have.’
But one resident complained: ‘The bird is a nuisance. Just because he likes the parrot doesn’t mean he should terrorise the whole village with it.’ Since Mr Pikul got Elvis seven years ago, the macaw has become a regular sight in Wilsden, West Yorkshire.
The businessman added: ‘Elvis is just a mad old thing, he follows me when I go to work. He clings on to the van roof and holds on for dear life, then flies around until he feels like coming home.’

Why Cell Phones And Driving Don't Mix
The notion that talking on a cell phone while driving a car isn’t safe seems obvious, yet what happens in the brain while it juggles the two tasks is not.
A study by a University of South Carolina psychology researcher featured in the journal, Experimental Psychology, provides a better understanding of why language – talking and listening, including on a cell phone – interferes with visual tasks, such as driving.
In two different experiments, associate professor of psychology Dr. Amit Almor found that planning to speak and speaking put far more demands on the brain’s resources than listening.

Man Bitten On The Penis By Deadly Snake
A tourist in Australia suffered greatly for going to the toilet at the roadside, when an extremely venomous snake bit him on the penis while he was attending to his business.
The man was caught short on the road in Queensland, resulting in him having to answer the call of nature close to Laura (that’s a town in the northern tip of Queensland, not a woman).
But as he was crouching down beside the road, a brown snake – the venom of which is deadly – spotted an opportunity, slid between the man’s legs and bit him on the penis.
Fortunately for the tourist, while the snake left its mark on his genitals, he wasn’t poisoned. An ambulance spokesman told cairns.com.au: ‘It certainly had a swipe at him, but it didn’t envenomate him.’
