Dude Survives Shark Attack
A Dudley teenager has survived being bitten in the face by a shark - in his own bedroom. Sam Hawthorne, 14, was “attacked” when he sleepwalked into a long-dead souvenir shark hanging on the wall.
He was left with the creature embedded in his cheek and blood pouring from a wound. His mother, Susan Hawthorne, was woken by her son’s screams, but arrived too late to fend off the holiday souvenir.
She said: “It was like something out of a horror film. “The shark must have been embedded in Sam’s cheek for about 15 minutes and he was in a lot of pain.”
Sam, who escaped with just a small scar, added: “It was the most frightening experience of my life.”

No Gender Differences In Math Performance
We’ve all heard it. Many of us in fact believe it. Girls just aren’t as good at math as boys.
But is it true? After sifting through mountains of data - including SAT results and math scores from 7 million students who were tested in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act - a team of scientists says the answer is no.
Whether they looked at average performance, the scores of the most gifted children or students’ ability to solve complex math problems, girls measured up to boys.
“There just aren’t gender differences anymore in math performance,” says University of Wisconsin-Madison psychology professor Janet Hyde, the study’s leader. “So parents and teachers need to revise their thoughts about this.”

Piglet With Monkey's Face

Villagers were shocked after a monkey-like piglet was born in China.
Curious locals flocked to the home of owner Feng Changlin after news of the piglet spread in Fengzhang village, Xiping township.
"It’s hideous. No one will be willing to buy it, and it scares the family to even look at it!” Feng told Oriental Today.
He says the piglet looks just like a monkey, with two thin lips, a small nose and two big eyes. Its rear legs are also much longer than its forelegs, causing it to jump instead of walk.
Feng’s wife said the monkey-faced piglet was one of five newborns of a sow which the family had raised for nine years.

Boy Breaks Canine Tooth Biting A Pitbull
An 11-year-old boy is enjoying a flash of fame in Brazil after biting a pitbull that attacked him as he played in his uncle’s back yard.
Gabriel Almeida, who lives on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, broke a canine tooth when he bit into the dog’s neck to fend off an attack. Since then, he has been pampered in the studios of several TV stations, where he has been recounting his ordeal.
“I grabbed him by the neck and bit,” he told O Globo newspaper. “It’s no big deal. It’s better to lose a tooth than to lose your life.”
He was freed when bystanders pulled the dog off him and needed four stitches in his arm.

Oasis Class Cruise Ship

How big is too big? It seems like that question has never been asked in cruise ship design. Next year, Royal Caribbean cruise line is scheduled to launch two Oasis Class ships, which would be the largest cruise ships ever.
So, how big is the Oasis class cruise ship? The first one, Oasis of the Seas, will be 118 feet (36 m) longer than the Eiffel Tower. It’s so large that it has its own “Central Park” in the middle of the ship that is open to the sky and filled with lush tropical gardens, restaurants, and shops.

Man's Bottom Worth $2 Million
Graham Butterfield is the offical “Bed Bouncer” at his job with bed firm Silentnight. The 54-year-old says his bottom is very sensitive and he says it can “literally feel the difference in materials and fillings used, simply by sitting on it.”
Butterfield’s duties include bouncing on the beds and giving feedback on softness, textures and fillings. Butterfield’s company insured the prized posterior when it found Butterfield’s bottom was more responsive than the norm and says the policy is “worth every penny.”
Bosses say Butterfield’s rear is so reliable in recognizing different filllings in mattresses that product developers began consulting Butterfield on new products. So basically a bed either goes on sale or not based on Butterfield’s tests.
An insurance company out of Switzerland has provided the policy which basically means a payout of $2 million if Butterfield’s rear is damaged in an accident.

Deer Causes Chaos In Italy

A wild deer fleeing summer storms brought chaos to an Italian city centre when it ran amok. The deer jumped over tables at local cafes, overturned potted plants and destroyed various stands selling produce from local shops before it was cornered in the city of Bolzano.
Numerous policemen, hunters and the city’s fire brigade spent several hours trying to catch the deer. Eventually, the animal was trapped in a car park where it was shot after smashing a shop window.
Two people required treatment when they suffered cuts and bruises after being butted.

Sailors Find Dolphin In Garden
Two sailors were amazed when they woke to find a dead dolphin in their garden - especially as they live on a steep hill half a mile from the sea.
Mike Elliott, 28, and housemate Gary Harvey, who are both Royal Navy marine engineers, thought they were dreaming when they woke to find the 3ft dolphin, in Portland.
Mr Harvey, 23, said: “I woke up, looked out of my window and saw what appeared to be a dolphin in the garden. “I went downstairs to have a closer look and that confirmed it - there was a three foot dolphin in the back garden.
They called police who made house to house enquiries about the dolphin, who died of unknown causes.
“There was no evidence a criminal offence had been committed,” a Dorset Police spokesman added. Environmental health officers from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council were contacted and removed the mammal.

New Way To Weigh Giant Black Holes
How do you weigh the biggest black holes in the universe? One answer now comes from a completely new and independent technique that astronomers have developed using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.
By measuring a peak in the temperature of hot gas in the center of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4649, scientists have determined the mass of the galaxy’s supermassive black hole.
The method, applied for the first time, gives results that are consistent with a traditional technique.

Woman Has 64kg Tumour Removed
Linda Rittenbach tried all the diets and workouts, but nothing would help her lose weight. Doctors even suggested weight-loss surgery.
It wasn’t until the Redmond woman went to a different doctor this spring for flu-like symptoms that she found out why she couldn’t shed the pounds.
A 64-kilogram cancerous tumour had been growing near her stomach for the past 20 years. Her doctor predicted that surgery had only a 20-per-cent success rate.
It took doctors in Redmond and Portland three surgeries, over two months, to remove the tumour. Doctors had to remove her kidneys to complete the surgery, and were only able to put one back.
“The type of tumour that wound up being extracted was extremely rare,” said Dr. George Tsai at St. Charles Medical Centre-Redmond.

Woman Kills Husband With Folding Couch
A Russian woman in St Petersburg killed her drunk husband with a folding couch, Russian media reported.
St Petersburg’s Channel Five said the man’s wife, upset with her husband for being drunk and refusing to get up, kicked a handle after an argument, activating a mechanism that folds the couch up against a wall.
The couch, which doubles as a bed, folds up automatically in order to save space.
The man fell between the mattress and the back of the couch, Channel Five quoted emergency workers as saying.
The woman then walked out of the room and returned three hours later to check on what she thought was an unusually quiet sleeping husband.

Biscuits Made Of Mud

Impoverished Haitians are increasingly resorting to eating biscuits made of mud as food prices soar in the Caribbean country.
The discs are made from dried yellow clay mixed with water, salt and vegetable shortening or margarine. The mud, which comes from Haiti’s central plateau region, is first strained and then shaped into biscuits which are left in the sun.
The pale brown biscuits, known by locals simply as “terre”, have traditionally been eaten by pregnant Haitians and children as an antacid and source of calcium. However, for some Haitians unable to afford even a plate of rice, terre has become their staple diet.

Do We Think That Machines Can Think?
When our PC goes on strike again we tend to curse it as if it was a human.
The question of why and under what circumstances we attribute human-like properties to machines and how such processes manifest on a cortical level was investigated in a project led by Dr. Sören Krach and Prof. Tilo Kircher from the RWTH Aachen University (Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy) in cooperation with the Department of “Social Robotics” (Bielefeld University) and the Neuroimage Nord (Hamburg).
Almost daily, new accomplishments in the field of human robotics are presented in the media. Constructions of increasingly elaborate and versatile humanoid robots are reported and thus human-robot interactions accumulate in daily life.

Goat Versus Mercedes-Benz
An incident in Alabama ended up with a goat being arrested, a Mercedes-Benz being assaulted, and a dog becoming embroiled in the situation as well.
The kerfuffle occurred on Sunday, when a woman driving the Mercedes saw a goat and dog playing on U.S. 72 in northern Alabama, Sheriff Mike Blakely said.
She stopped, afraid they would get hit, Blakely said. But then the goat decided to jump on the car and wouldn’t come down.
Fearing scratches and dents in her imported car’s paint job, the woman called the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department. A deputy eventually got the goat down and put it in his patrol car - but then the dog jumped into his back seat too.
The deputy took the dog to a veterinarian and the goat to the home of another deputy. ‘If anybody is missing a goat and dog, they need to let us know,’ Blakely said.

Asteroid Impacts On Earth: A Protection Plan
A century ago this week, an event in far-off Siberia rang a cosmic wake-up call for Earth. That explosive event over remote Tunguska is generally viewed by scientists as a large space rock that pierced through the atmosphere of Siberia, then detonated to flatten some 2,000 square kilometers of trees.
One hundred years later, there is certainty in the stars – the thought that an asteroid loitering out there in space has Earth’s name on it. But today, a matching of technology and space governance could negate such events from happening in the future.
“The Tunguska event just 100 years ago reminds us that the threat of an asteroid strike is real,” said Ray Williamson, Executive Director of the Secure World Foundation (SWF).

Man Caught Faking Heart Attacks
A 52-year-old Milwaukee-area man has been accused of faking heart attacks to avoid paying restaurant bills and cab fares.
Police say the Waukesha man took a cab to a mall Monday and pretended to have a heart attack. The cab driver left unpaid. Authorities say the man then ran up a $23 bill when he had a steak dinner at Applebee’s. He again pretended to have a heart attack.
This time the fire department took him to a hospital. A doctor there recognized the man as having pulled the same stunt in the past few weeks.
He was charged Thursday with defrauding a restaurant as a habitual criminal. He could get up to nine months in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Crazy Cat Has Mended Its Ways
A combative cat named Lewis who frightened the neighbours and got his owner into legal trouble two years ago has done so well under house arrest that the case has now been scratched.
A judge has dismissed a reckless endangerment charge against Lewis’s owner, Ruth Cisero, concluding she had met terms of a special probation for first-time offenders. Lewis is now an indoor pet, allowed outside only in a cat carrier.
The scratch-happy black-and-white cat drew widespread attention in 2006 when its owner opted for a trial on the criminal charge rather than euthanize or declaw him.
It became a national claws celeb, and some pet lovers even sported “Save Lewis” shirts.

Woman Crashes Car and Wants More Beer
A woman crashed her car through the front window of a convenience store - and then tried to buy a six-pack of beer.
Lynne Rice, 74, drove her 1988 Cadillac into Joe’s Food Mart and Video in Norwalk, California on Sunday evening, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Jenny Ha said.
The car plowed about halfway through the store but nobody was injured. Rice got out of the car, walked over to the cooler and pulled out a six-pack of Budweiser, said the store owner.
‘I don’t know how she managed to walk,’ Awada said, adding a cashier declined the sale and instead called police.
Rice was taken to a hospital for examination because she had a pre-existing medical condition, Lt. Ha said. She was also arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence and released on $15,000 bail, authorities said.

Men Share Their Creative Work Online More Than Women
A Northwestern University study finds that men are more likely to share their creative work online than women despite the fact that women and men engage in creative activities at essentially equal rates.
“Because sharing information on the Internet today is a form of participating in public culture and contributing to public discourse, that tells us men’s voices are being disproportionately heard,” says Eszter Hargittai, assistant professor of communication studies at Northwestern University. Hargittai co-authored the study with Northwestern researcher Gina Walejko.
Overall, almost two-thirds of men reported posting their work online while only half of women reported doing so. When Hargittai and Northwestern’s Walejko controlled for self-reported digital literacy and Web know-how, however, they found that men and women actually posted their material about equally.
