Puppy Scares Off Three Bears In New Jersey
A seven-kilogram cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs after they strayed into his owners’ backyard in New Jersey.
It’s unknown if Pawlee’s bark is worse than his bite, but the dog’s scare tactics worked just fine. These three bears got the hint and took off.
The dog’s owners had just let him out for the morning when he ran into the yard and started “barking his head off.”
His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods.

Cat Survives Seven Weeks Trapped Under Bath
A four-year-old cat in Germany called Bonny has survived after being walled in beneath a bathtub for seven weeks. ‘It’s a miracle,’ said Monika Hoppert, a 60-year-old widow from the western town of Stadthagen.
‘I’m a strong believer, I think she must have had a guardian angel. I’m so happy.’ Bonny disappeared on June 19 while workmen were replacing pipes in the block of flats where Hoppert lives. The black cat was last seen in a neighboring apartment, where the cladding around a bathtub had been removed.
Just before tub was sealed up again, Bonny had probably crept underneath, Hoppert said.
By the time the neighbor heard Bonny’s plaintive miaowing from behind the tiles on August 8, the cat’s weight had dropped from 13 pounds to 4 pounds.

Using the latest optical brain imaging techniques, University of British Columbia post-doctoral fellow Judit Gervain and a team of researchers from Italy and Chile documented brain activities of 22 newborns (2-3 days old) when exposed to recordings of made-up words.
The researchers mixed words that end in repeating syllables - such as “mubaba” and “penana” - with words without repetition - such as “mubage” and “penaku.”

A study of Google Earth satellite images has revealed that herds of cattle tend to face in the north-south direction of Earth’s magnetic lines. Staring at cows may not equal the thrill of spotting celebrities in public or rubbernecking at car accidents, but the researchers found nonetheless that our bovine friends display this strange sixth sense for direction.
“Google Earth is perfect for this kind of research, because the animals are undisturbed by the observer,” said Sabine Begall, a zoologist at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany and coauthor on the study detailed in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Bao Xishun can once again stand tall and proud to be the “World’s Tallest Man” after a taller Ukrainian refused to be measured.
Guinness World Records has taken the title of world’s tallest man away from Leonid Stadnyk because he has continually refused to be measured in accordance with the publication’s guidelines.
The title now reverts back to China’s Bao Xishun, who stands at 7ft 8.95ins.
Stadnyk stands 8ft 5.5ins tall.

Man Banned From Sex At Love Nest
A man has been banned by a court from having sex with his partner at her home after keeping neighbours awake with their noisy romps.
Brighton council obtained an injunction against Adam Hinton, 32, of Brighton, for threatening neighbours whose complaints had led to legal action.
Last week he was fined £200 for breaching a noise abatement order.
Partner Kerry Norris faced eviction and Mr Hinton has been banned from going within 100m of her one-bedroom council flat in Brighton.
Neighbours said they had suffered two years of the couple’s noise throughout the night. Some suffering sleepless nights were rehoused by the council.

Men Claim To Have Found Bigfoot
In the latest monster-hunting news, three American men claim to have found a body of the famed Bigfoot – and have released a photograph to ‘prove’ it.
They claim that the body – which they say is 7ft 7in tall and weighs more than 500lb – was found in the woods of northern Georgia (the US state, not the superpower-bothering country in the Caucasus).
The sasquatch body, from the photo already released, has reddish-brown hair, an ape-like face, and generally looks a bit like a slightly mildewed fancy-dress gorilla costume.
Noted Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman says on his website that ‘it certainly looks like the real deal.’ He adds ‘the gorilla-like facial features, the robust lack of canines, and the grinding surfaces shown in the teeth suggest a bulky vegetarian with a mixture of higher primate characteristics.’
The team behind the discovery say: ‘Extensive scientific studies will be done on the body by a team of scientists including a molecular biologist, an anthropologist, a paleontologist and other scientists over the next few months at an undisclosed location.’

This cutting-edge research is the first step to examine how memories manifest themselves in the brain, and how a brain stores specific pieces of data.
The key aim is that eventually this will lead to a better understanding of development and of diseases and disorders which affect the brain such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, stoke and brain injury.
The robot’s biological brain is made up of cultured neurons which are placed onto a multi-electrode array (MEA).

Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.
The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God.
“A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them,” he told the BBC.
He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer. “I don’t go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them.”

Scientists have discovered a new species of bacteria in the mouth.
The finding could help scientists to understand tooth decay and gum disease and may lead to better treatments, according to research published in the August issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.
“The healthy human mouth is home to a tremendous variety of microbes including viruses, fungi, protozoa and bacteria,” said Professor William Wade from King’s College London Dental Institute.

Ghost In School Baffles Educators
An unexplained image that triggered a motion detecting surveillance camera and then appeared to cast a shadow as it moved inside a North Carolina high school has baffled educators.
The dark object in a human form was caught on camera at Asheville High School at 2:51 a.m. on Aug. 1. A motion-activated camera was activated for 24 seconds to capture the object. The shape is seen moving across the floor and then above the school elevator.
“That is the coolest thing that I’ve ever seen,” teacher Martha Gietner said. “It looks like a person. It really does. I think it’s a ghost.” The black image is then seen moving into a lighted hallway and casting a shadow.
Skeptics are having a hard time explaining what could cause a shadow and appear to float in the building at 2:51 a.m. The director of public relations at Ashville High School, Charlie Glazener, said the video cannont be explained.

Israeli media Monday reported that the ultra-Orthodox Jewish parents, whose names were not released, didn’t notice the child was missing until they were told, in the air, that she had been found at Ben-Gurion airport.

That was what eight boys in Michigan did this week in an effort to set a world record.
The boys began the attempt Friday morning at the Bounce-a-Lot entertainment centre southwest of Detroit in Flat Rock. They bounced two at a time in shifts in an inflatable castle.
Ten-year-old Mason Brott says the bouncing wasn’t as tough as he thought it would be.
Guinness World Records must still authenticate the record, a process that could take months. The boys, ages 8 to 11, decided to try to beat the bouncing record of 19 hours and 24 minutes, set nearly two years ago.

11 Cattle Die In Lightning Strike In Germany
A bolt of lightning killed 11 cattle who took shelter under a tree during a storm in southern Germany. The cattle had been out to pasture when a severe storm came up near the southwestern town of Freiburg and deluged the area with rain and hail Wednesday night.
The animals were pressed together under the tree when the lightning splintered the trunk and sent a bolt of electricity into the ground that killed the animals. The loss of the livestock was estimated at 78,000.
Two of the herd survived the lightning strike. No injuries to people were reported, although the storm flooded basements and uprooted trees.
