20-year-old message returns to sender

Messages in bottles that are thrown out to sea are often never answered.

However Lyn Henshaw is one of the lucky few who not only received confirmation that her message had been found, but also got to meet its recipient.

It turns out that only weeks after Lyn, then 11, threw it out to sea in 1985, the bottle was found by student Brian Jones on a beach just further up the coast from her childhood home in Mouille Point.

Then after 20 years and several unsuccessful attempts to find her, Jones, Henshaw and the letter were finally brought together on Friday.

Said 30-year-old Henshaw: “It was amazing meeting Brian and seeing my letter. I even remembered that I tore the paper out of a ledger book from my dad’s work.

“It’s unbelievable that he (Brian Jones) found it. It’s been about 20 years. I thought it would pop up on the other side of the world and someone in the Antarctic would reply.”
