Elderly Women Wake Up To Find Naked Man In House
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - It was a rude awakening for several elderly women in Volusia County when they found a naked man in their house, and he’s still on the loose and could strike again.
Some of the victims have found the man in their home more than once and he seems to be targeting elderly women.
The man has struck repeatedly in a quiet little New Smyrna Beach neighborhood. When he’s caught, he’ll be charged with burglary, even though he hasn’t stolen anything but the women’s sense of security.
“I woke up to somebody playing with the toes on my right foot,” said one of the man’s victims.
It was a terrifying way for the 73-year-old woman to wake at two in the morning. But the toe tickling is only part of the bizarre encounter.
“What I saw was this man standing at the foot of my bed, no clothes on,” the woman explained. “Needless to say, I screamed and he ran.”
Man Dies After Having Sex With Horse
State Sen. Pam Roach wants Washington residents to stop horsing around with their stallions - and other domesticated animals.
Roach, outraged by a Seattle man’s death after having sex with a horse, said she is proposing a law that would make having sex with an animal punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
“This is a crime against innocent life, and you know that the animal is not seeking this,” Roach said. “This is something a human being has decided to commit against another innocent being.”
Roach is planning to introduce the bill at the state’s next legislative session in December.
The proposed legislation stems from an investigation into an Enumclaw, Wash., farm, where a 45-year-old man died on July 2 from internal bleeding due to a perforated colon resulting from having sex with a horse.
When the story was published, Roach said dozens of residents sent e-mails calling for legislation to ban bestiality.
Surgeon Liable for Leaving Needle in Patient
NEW YORK - A judge found a physician negligent in a medical malpractice lawsuit accusing the doctor of losing a surgical needle in a patient’s abdomen and then closing the opening after he couldn’t find it.
State Supreme Court Justice Eileen Bransten found Dr. Douglas M. Heymann liable for the mishap during hernia surgery in 2001. The needle eventually lodged in 55-year-old Christopher Faas’ liver, where it remains.
The decision was released Wednesday; the amount of damages Faas will be awarded will be decided at trial.
Bransten dismissed Faas’ motion for a summary judgment against another surgeon, Dr. Joseph Iraci, and Lenox Hill Hospital, ruling those cases should be tried. The trials are scheduled for Aug. 2.
Heymann had called Iraci in to help him find the needle, and the two doctors spent hours searching for it, eventually closing up Faas’ abdomen without locating it.
Faas’ lawyer, Anthony Di Pietro, said Faas’ health is at great risk as a result of the mishap: “Every time he feels a pain, he wonders if this needle is killing him,” he said.
Michael Gallay, a lawyer for the defendants, declined to comment.
Lizard Saliva Helps Diabetes Patients Control Weight
BALTIMORE - Two new diabetes medications have helped some patients control their weight.
Barbara Oster has had diabetes for 15 years, and her medication wasn’t working so well, reported WBAL-TV in Baltimore.
“It just blows you up, makes you feel like you’re gaining all this weight,” she said.
The Food and Drug Administration recently approved two new diabetes drugs - Byetta and Symlin - that studies have proved help patients control their illness and cut back their eating.
“One of the lovely side effects of both drugs is people tend to lose weight,” said Dr. Paula Yutzy, a diabetes educator at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center.
Byetta comes from the saliva of a scary-looking lizard - the Gila monster. The drugs mimic the effects of hormones, helping to regulate the disease by controlling liver functions and digestion, as well as making patients feel more full.
Yutzy said she’s glad the medications have reached the public.
Sex Swap Man Escapes Jail
A Bulgarian man has escaped a three year jail sentence after having a sex change operation.
Under Bulgarian law, the op meant he was legally a different person and could no longer be prosecuted.
Sretko Ickov, from Dragor near Sofia, was arrested and charged with theft before being released on bail last year.
But the case, which took more than a year to come to court, has now been dropped after Ickov turned up in court as a woman.
The judge ruled that the thief, now known as Albena Mihajlova, could not be sent to prison because she was no longer the person charged with the crime, Bulgarian television Nova Televizija reported.
Ickov claimed he had always felt unhappy as a man and planned to start a new crime free life in his new identity as a woman.
He also claims to have fallen in love and is planning to get married shortly, he told the court.
Man Cuts Feet off 'Promiscuous' Wife
A Pakistani man and some of his relatives chopped off his wife’s feet after accusing her of being promiscuous, police said yesterday.
The woman survived the gruesome attack, the latest in a wave of assaults that have raised international concern about the plight of women in rural Pakistan.
‘It is a shameful act of cruelty against a woman,’ said Talat Ali, a senior police official in Punjab.’
The 32-year-old woman told police her feet were chopped off on 24 June by her husband, her father-in-law, a brother-in-law and two others after they accused her of being ‘of bad character’, a euphemism for promiscuous.
Violence against women is common in rural Pakistan where tribal and feudal customs hold sway.
The latest incident occurred in central Punjab province where the 2002 gang-rape of a woman, Mukhtaran Mai, on the orders of a village council, triggered an international outcry.
Creatures Frozen for 32,000 Years Still Alive
A new type of organism discovered in an Arctic tunnel came to life in the lab after being frozen for 32,000 years.
The deep-freeze bacteria could point to new methods of cryogenics, and they are the sort of biology scientists say might exist on Mars and other planets and moons.
“The existence of microorganisms in these harsh environments suggests - but does not promise - that we might one day discover similar life forms in the glaciers or permafrost of Mars or in the ice crust and oceans of Jupiter’s moon Europa,” said Richard Hoover, an astrobiologist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Other microbes have been discovered in similar frigid environments, sometimes clinging to pockets of liquid water in ice packs. And some microbes survive in ice as spores, but they need to be cultured to bring them to life.
NASA described the newfound critter as “the first fully described, validated species ever found alive in ancient ice.”
“They immediately started swimming when the ice melted,” Hoover told LiveScience, adding that the cryopreserved bacteria were instantly ready to eat and multiply.
Dog Fights Off 700-Pound Alligator
PINOPOLIS, S.C. (AP) - Dogs don’t usually survive alligator attacks - especially when the reptile is three times the canine’s size. But Cooper, a 5-year-old golden retriever, is an exception. The spirited dog fought off a 14-foot, 700-pound alligator in a Lake Moultrie canal last month and lived to howl about it.
“I thought he was dead,” said 14-year-old Chase Kierspe of the family pet. “The alligator was huge. I didn’t think he could fight it. He fights me, but that’s all.”
Cooper escaped from the backyard for a swim across the canal and apparently attracted the gator. Chase was cutting the grass when he saw the alligator spying his pet. He threw a cup and a lawn chair at the gator, but it didn’t budge.
Then Cooper leaped and the gator followed. Chase ran and screamed for help.
After it was all over, Cooper had lost a few teeth and had flesh and muscle torn from a front leg and chunks of skin missing from both haunches. The gator suffered bites to its snout.
