Engineering Prank Gets Students Arrested

Five UBC Engineering students have been released on appearance notices after their arrest for mischief over $5000. Vancouver Police officers found the students attempting to lower part of a Volkswagen over the edge of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge at around 4 a.m., according to a police news release.

At some point, the rope or cabling they were using failed and the vehicle plunged into the Burrard Inlet. No one was injured in the incident ... Engineering students have been hanging the hollowed-out shells of Volkswagen Beetles from Vancouver bridges since about 1981 to mark the start of engineering week at the university.
