Piranha strikes in Oslo

The accident occurred at Oslo’s Reptile Park, where Helle Hogner was helping her son Are.

“When I opened the hatch to show some visitors how to feed the fish one of the piranhas suddenly decided that I was a flying fish. At least it jumped into the air and snapped at one of my fingers and the blood just spurted. The piranha must have thought it was feeding time,” Hogner told newspaper Telemarksavisa.

Hogner said that the wound was so clean that it didn’t hurt at once. At the emergency ward they patched her finger up.

“It caused a certain amount of commotion when a middle-aged woman turned up at the emergency ward after being bitten in the finger by a piranha in Oslo. In the end all physicians and personnel were gathered around the finger, this was a rare experience for them,” Hogner said.

The staff at the emergency room photographed the wounded finger and filed it under rare cases.
