Son Finds Mom After Receiving Death Notice

Lisbon - A 41-year-old man who quit his job in Peru to travel to his native Portugal five months after getting his mother’s death certificate in the mail was stunned to find her alive and well, daily newspaper 24Horas reported on Friday.

Portuguese police sent the document to Joao Cunha in January and after saving up enough money he left his job as a hotel receptionist in Lima in May to travel to Portugal to look after his mother’s affairs, it said.

“It was a huge shock to discover that my mother had not died and was in fact alive,” he told the newspaper.

“It is unbelievable that, because of a mistake, this country caused me to lose my job and force me to come to Portugal for nothing. All because of a case of mistaken identity,” he added.

“I don’t have money to go back to Peru. I don’t have a job. And at my mother’s small house there is no room for me to sleep,” he said.

Cunha said he left his wife behind in Peru, where he has lived for 11 years.
