Undertaker Fell into Grave During Funeral

An undertaker was knocked off his feet by a gust of wind and blown into a grave during a funeral, it emerged today.

Arthur Cambrey (corr), 78, toppled 9ft into the freshly-dug plot as he leaned over to move flowers from the top of a coffin.

He had to be rescued by cemetery staff equipped with a ladder after spending 15 minutes in the grave.

But the funeral director, who has been in the business more than 54 years, brushed himself off and carried on with the service.

Later he was taken to hospital for a check-up but was unhurt apart from a slight scratch on his head.

Mark Galbraith, secretary of the Llanelli Joint Burial Authority, said: “He is quite a slight gentleman and the wind just blew him over.

“He is a real professional. He just wanted to get on with the job.”

He said that an investigation had been undertaken into the accident during the service at Llanelli District Cemetery.

But added: “There was nothing we could have done. It was just a freak accident.”
